Texas Runoff Results See a Dramatic Shift in State Politics

Since the start of the redistricting battle between Republicans and Democrats, the state of Texas has been the topic of much discussion. And after Tuesday’s (May 26) primary runoffs, it’s clear that both parties are being forced to rebuild just months before the highly anticipated November midterms.

Rep. Al Green spent years as one of Congress’ most outspoken Democrats, pressing impeachment efforts against President Donald Trump and becoming a familiar face in the national resistance movement. Last night, however, Green’s political career came to a sudden halt in a reshaped Houston district that reflected a broader political realignment sweeping across his state.

Green lost his Democratic runoff to Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee, a younger and more digitally savvy candidate whose victory points to a generational shift inside the Democratic Party, CNN reported. The upset came as Texas Republicans delivered an even more consequential result statewide: Attorney General Ken Paxton defeated four-term Sen. John Cornyn in a bruising Republican Senate runoff. But for folks paying close attention to either race, the night underscored the president’s dominance over the GOP and influence in state politics nationwide, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Paxton’s victory marked one of the most dramatic defeats for a sitting senator in decades. Backed heavily by Trump, Paxton focused the race on his undying loyalty to the president and MAGA. Incumbent Cornyn, on the other hand, was once considered a political heavyweight with deep ties to the Senate, but after struggling against criticism from far-right conservative voters who viewed him as “not Trump enough,” it seems the curtains have closed.

Both runoff elections exposed the great shift in Texas politics. Republicans embraced a gritty allegiance to Trump, while Democrats continue to struggle as a younger generation of candidates challenge longtime incumbents in newly redrawn districts.

We previously told you Texas Republicans redrew congressional maps last year after pressure from Trump to create more GOP-friendly districts. The unprecedented redistricting effort led to several incumbent Democrats, namely Rep. Green and Rep. Jasmine Crockett, being drawn out of their home districts and forced into running in nearby districts.

Menefee’s defeat of Green highlighted how redistricting and demographic shifts are reshaping Houston-area politics. The 78-year-old served in public office for nearly half a century, building a reputation as a civil rights advocate and institutional lawmaker.

In similar news, former Rep. Colin Allred defeated incumbent Rep. Julie Johnson in Texas’ newly redrawn 33rd district, according to CBS News. Allred previously lost to Ted Cruz in a 2024 Senate bid. Johnson criticized Allred’s past immigration-related votes, while Allred attacked Johnson over stock trades and corporate influence.

Back to the GOP…

The Republican Senate primary also became the most expensive in Texas history, with both campaigns and outside groups pouring more than $100 million into the race. Paxton overcame years of legal and ethical controversies, including past impeachment proceedings and securities fraud allegations, by framing himself as a conservative fighter targeted by political enemies, according to WESA.

Now, Texas heads toward a fiery general election season. Paxton is expected to face Democratic state Rep. James Talarico in November, a matchup national Democrats hope could become unexpectedly competitive in a state Republicans have long dominated. But Tuesday’s results sent a clear message: in Texas Republican politics, Trump’s endorsement continues to be the state’s most powerful form of currency.
