NeNe Leakes Forced to Make a Tough Choice As Her Son Faces New Legal Troubles
After a long history of issues, former “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star NeNe Leakes‘ eldest son, Bryson, is facing more legal trouble.
Fans who’ve closely followed Leakes and her family history may already be familiar, but for those who aren’t, allow us to get you up to speed. Bryson was first arrested in July 2023 on charges of probation violation, possession of a schedule II controlled substance, loitering/prowling, and giving a false name, address, or birthdate, per PEOPLE. Shortly after his arrest made the rounds on social media, the former reality TV star sat down for an interview with Carlos King, where she revealed that he’d been suffering from a years-long drug addiction and that she was no longer in a place where she could help him.
“Like many families out there, I have family members that are struggling with drugs and certain addictions. He has an addiction. He’s been struggling with it for years. He’s been in rehab for a couple of times, and he still has come back out and relapsed,” Leakes said at the time.
Leakes went on to say that while she supports her son, she knows that as an adult, her ability to help is limited.
“As a mom, just to watch it—my hands are tied,” she continued. “For people who have had children or family members that have been on drugs, they know that they have to be ready. They have to simply be ready.”
After his arrest, Bryson had to spend one year on probation, pay a fine of $500, complete 40 hours of community service, and undergo random drug tests. But in 2026, Page Six noted that Bryson was arrested yet again for violating his probation stemming from his 2023 arrest. In fact, the 30-something has been behind bars in a Georgia jail since the beginning of May, as he didn’t make good on any of the terms outlined in his probation.
Leakes has yet to publicly comment on the matter, but her story is one that sadly so many parents in the U.S. can relate to. According to the American Addiction Centers, it can be incredibly painful for parents to watch their children as they suffer through addiction, especially when they’re adults and no longer in their care.
The best advice the center gives, however, is to have conversations with the child when they’re ready, so that they can call a treatment center to discuss rehab options. Should they be open and receptive, parents can encourage their journey by maintaining a positive attitude about their recovery, visiting the treatment facility and encouraging them to participate in mutual support groups.
