Exclusive: NYC Mayor on Rolling Out His Free 2-K Childcare Program to Help Ease the Burden on Black Families

For many Black Americans, raising families in cities around the country has become nearly impossible. As the cost of practically everything continues to skyrocket, parents struggle, knowing that while they can’t afford to miss out on any of their wages, they’re forced to use a huge chunk of their paycheck to cover the cost of reliable childcare while they are at work.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is hoping to help ease the burden that childcare costs place on many families. Beginning in fall 2026, families in select neighborhoods around the city can enroll their children in a free 2-K childcare and educational program. The Root spoke exclusively with Mayor Mamdani about his universal childcare plan and how it can make life a little easier for Black families in the most expensive city in the country.

Mamdani admitted that for far too long, many of the neighborhoods Black New Yorkers call home are the last to receive resources and financial support from the local government. While examining the cause of the city’s cost-of-living crisis and the racial disparities that come along with it, his administration identified childcare as one of the biggest financial burdens. The stats back it up. According to the Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York, the burden is heaviest in neighborhoods in the Bronx and Brooklyn, where the median household income for families with young children is less than $50,000 per year. Many of those families are spending between 19 and 63 percent of their income on childcare.

While Mamdani says he hopes to expand the 2-K program citywide in the coming years, his administration made a concerted effort to ensure the launch of the program included seats in primarily Black and Brown communities.

“We made an intentional decision that, as we rolled out these first 2000 seats this year, we would do so in those very neighborhoods that are often overlooked,” he said. “These are seats that will be offered in the Rockaways, in Canarsie, in Brownsville, in Fordham, and they will offer not just a chance for a two-year-old child to have a high-quality education, but also to have it at no cost at all to parents who would otherwise be spending $20,000 a year.”

The mayor says this initiative is just one of many his office plans to implement to keep families from being priced out of the city.

“This is part of our investment to ensure that it is easier to not only live in the city, but to raise a family in this city,” he said.

Applications are due Friday, June 26. Visit the New York City Public Schools website for more information on the enrollment process.
