Michelle Williams Reignited an Age-Old Breakfast Debate in the Black Community With One Sweet Pic
Few debates within the Black community feel as deeply rooted (and very personal to some) as how people take their grits. Well, thanks to the Queen of Bridges, Michelle Williams, the conversation is back on the table… literally.
The singer, stage star, and all-around powerhouse recently shared a snapshot of her breakfast on Instagram that looked innocent enough at first glance. She was getting ready to eat a plate of scrambled eggs with salmon, a biscuit, and a bowl of grits from what appeared to be The Flying Biscuit Cafe.
However, what was meant to be a solid breakfast turned into a debate after one detail sent folks into a spiral – Williams holding up a packet of sugar with the caption, “Judge Me Not.”

And, of course, the judgment came in hot.
The post, which made its rounds from Instagram to Threads, quickly turned into a lighthearted cultural debate. For many folks, especially those with Southern roots, grits aren’t just food, they’re tradition and a non-negotiable savory experience. Once someone adds a sweet ingredient to this dish, it can cause an entire frenzy.
“Sis, sugar?!?! We need to have a meeting,
” wrote Cornelius Lindsey in the comments.
Even Williams’ Destiny’s Child bandmate, Kelly Rowland, had to chime in.
“Ummmmm—I love you, but Gouda over everything! PERIOD!” she wrote, firmly planting her flag on the savory side of the aisle.
Other celebrities also shared their disapproval in the comments.
“Why not just order cream of wheat?
,” Tamar Braxton posted.
Now, to be fair, the way people eat grits has always been a regional and generational debate. But, if you ask a “faithful grits eater,” there’s a strong chance they’ll tell you grits were never meant to be sweet.
Instead, these purists will argue that the “proper way” to make grits is to add butter, salt, and sometimes cheese. If they want it to be a bit savory, they’ll add shrimp and gravy to the dish. The savory grits warriors would suggest that sweet grits eaters have Farina, Cream of Wheat, or oatmeal instead.
Believe it or not, there were a few who sided with Williams, making the case for sugary grits, including talk show host Tamron Hall.
“The only way to do it !!!” she wrote in the comments.
This isn’t Williams’ first time professing her love for sweet grits. Back in 2021, she posted a song declaring her love for them, even playfully challenging naysayers in her caption, writing, “Fight me!”
The “Stop This Car” singer knew she had to put that caption because the smoke was waiting for her before she hit publish.
Are there any sugar-eating grits warriors, or are we all keeping it salty and savory?
