From Celebrities to Civil Rights Leaders: Inside The Growing Movement Behind Karmelo Anthony’s Appeal

Weeks after Karmelo Anthony was sentenced to 35 years in prison for the fatal 2025 stabbing of Austin Metcalf, a growing coalition of attorneys, civil rights advocates and grassroots supporters mobilized to challenge the conviction and push for a new trial.

The case has become one of the most closely watched and divisive criminal proceedings in the country as the verdict sparked fierce debate online and within civil rights circles about whether Anthony received a fair trial.

Now, Anthony has formed a new legal team in hopes of securing an appeal. Here’s a breakdown of all the ongoing efforts:

At the center of that effort is a newly assembled appellate team that includes some of Texas’ most prominent legal figures, we previously told you. Anthony’s family has enlisted veteran criminal defense attorney Russell Wilson, Innocence Project of Texas Executive Director Michael Ware and civil rights attorney Gary Bledsoe, who also serves as president of the Texas NAACP.

The legal team is set to conduct a complete review of the trial record, including jury selection, evidentiary rulings and other legal issues that could form the basis of an appeal. Their involvement has elevated the case beyond your typical criminal appeal and transformed it into a broader conversation about race, justice and due process.

The NAACP has also emerged as one of the most vocal critics of the verdict. Leaders have raised concerns about the absence of Black jurors on the panel that convicted Anthony and questioned whether the proceedings reflected deeper inequities within the criminal justice system.

“When Black defendants face unequal outcomes compared to other similar situations, it causes the public to lose trust in whether our justice system is truly fair, a feeling that many in our community have felt many times over,” the organization wrote in a statement.

Outside the courtroom, a grassroots movement has continued to gain momentum. Supporters have launched online petitions, organized fundraising campaigns and used social media platforms to amplify calls for a new trial. The “Free Karmelo” movement has attracted thousands of supporters who believe Anthony’s sentence was excessive for a teenager.

The case has also drawn attention from public figures, activists and even celebrities like Cardi B, who have used their platforms to discuss the broader racial and social issues raised by the trial. Their involvement has helped keep the case in the national spotlight long after the verdict was delivered.

Meanwhile, community leaders are attempting to channel the attention surrounding the case into broader conversations about youth violence, conflict resolution and criminal justice reform. Some advocates have called for increased investment in programs designed to prevent conflicts from escalating into tragedy.

Supporters of the conviction, however, maintain that the jury carefully reviewed the evidence and reached the appropriate verdict. They argue that efforts to overturn the conviction should focus on legal issues rather than political or racial issues.
