Wiz Khalifa’s Advice to His Teenage Son Sparks Online Debate About Handling Conflict

A candid moment between rapper Wiz Khalifa and his son has turned into a broader conversation about parenting, youth violence and how to handle conflict in public.

During a livestream, which has since gone viral, the rapper spoke with his 13-year-old son, Sebastian “Bash” Thomaz, whom he shares with television personality Amber Rose, after the teen called him about a situation in which another child allegedly tried to start a fight at a mall.

Khalifa’s response was calm but firm: avoid escalation whenever possible, but don’t leave yourself defenseless.

“Don’t get into no fight,” he was heard telling his son in the clip. “De-escalate the situation, and if you have to, protect yourself–but don’t put yourself in no situation where you know something like that is going to go down.”

The exchange quickly spread beyond the livestream audience, turning into a debate over how parents should prepare children, especially young Black boys, for confrontation in public spaces.

Many folks praised the rapper for steering his kid in the right direction.

We all know and love the California native, heavily-tattooed, marijuana-smoking “Black and Yellow” rapper. Given his somewhat controversial reputation, many folks didn’t expect his advice to his son to be so diplomatic.

“When your kid feels comfortable enough to call you and say ‘Dad, I don’t know what to do’ and then lets you walk him through the next steps you have done a tremendous job at parenting,” @thatVEXEDguy tweeted.

“The fact that he called his dad when he had an issue and he answered? Like he knows he can do that,” @Youngafriqueen said. “They have a good relationship.”

Others questioned whether emphasizing self-protection still risks normalizing violence, even in defensive terms.

“If he was a present father instead of smoking weed, his son would be spending time with dad instead of out alone,” @Justsimplyrob_ wrote.

“Grown a** man out here getting high on stream when he has teenage kids,” @factzOYfeelingz said. “Thats what needs to be criticized.”

The clip also fueled commentary about the pressures young people face navigating conflict in real time, often without adult intervention. Many users focused on Khalifa’s insistence that walking away should be the first option, with force only as a last resort.

“Y’all don’t know good parenting. he could’ve told his son to crash out, and then his son could’ve got hurt, put in jail, or worse,” @luhgudda pointed out. “Instead, he told his lil one to avoid it and de-escalate and y’all say it’s bad parenting.”

The moment highlighted a father trying to prepare his child for unpredictable situations without encouraging confrontation. In a media landscape often dominated by celebrity and influencer culture, it can be easy for young folks to feel alone while facing life’s pressures.

Khalifa, however, tried to reassure his son that avoiding trouble, staying aware and coming home safe is more important than anything else.

“Everybody’s focused on the setting instead of the context. Listen to the conversation,” @AWaaare said. “Everything was respectful on both ends, the communication was open enough for lil bro to call his dad instead of hiding something like that, plus it’s not like wiz said let’s ride tonight.”
