The World Cup is making its way to the United States for the first time since 1994. International soccer fans will be flying in from all over the globe to wave their flags and pray that their countries will be the one to take home the trophy and be declared the greatest soccer team in the world.
Representing the sparring nations on the pitch will be highly talented soccer players from all nations, but as usual, at The Root, we are cheering for everybody Black, and there is no shortage of incredible Black soccer players. So if you’re wondering which Black soccer players to root for, we’ve got you. Here are some of the best Black athletes you’ll see on the pitch this summer.
Bukayo Saka

Bukayo Saka, 24, is a national treasure for Team England. Having helped secure a Premier League victory for his North London-based soccer club, Arsenal, for the first time in 22 years, Saka will be expected to bring his quick speed and agility to the World Cup pitch as a right winger for England. He is often thought of as a soccer “superstar” and has been called “consistently excellent” by the sports publication Pain in the Arsenal.
Kylian Mbappé

Kylian Mbappé, 27, is nothing short of a soccer legend. As captain of the French national team, Mbappé becomes the Flash once he hits the soccer field, dribbling the ball up and down the pitch and striking when the time is right. In the 2022 World Cup, the French soccer player was awarded the Golden Boot, the award given to the tournament’s top goal-scorer, which only goes to show that he is a beast on the pitch.
Lamine Yamal

At just 18, Lamine Yamal is ready to represent Team Spain in his first-ever World Cup. A soccer prodigy, Yamal made his senior debut for Barcelona at age 15 in 2023, and one year later, he helped secure victory for the Spanish national team at the 2024 European Soccer Championship. Although he is recovering from an injury now, Yamal is set to make his World Cup debut during the Spain vs. Uruguay match, according to the sports publication Barca Universal.
Jude Bellingham

Jude Bellingham is another soccer player for Team England. Having first been scouted for the senior national team at age 17, Bellingham plays with a maturity that goes beyond his years. Currently, the 22-year-old is a fixture for the Spanish soccer club Real Madrid, but he will be joining his English crew on a flight to the States.
Vinicius Junior

Icons of the World Cup, Brazil will be bringing another team packed with stars, and one of them will be 25-year-old Vinícius Júnior. However, according to the sports publication Sports Mole, Júnior suffered an injury on the pitch recently that left him with a limp. But per Sports Mole, the player was given the all-clear, and Brazilian soccer fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing one of their major players will be on his way to the States.
Ousmane Dembele

Rocking bleu, Ousmane Dembélé will be attempting to win the trophy for Team France. Unfortunately for Dembélé, he recently suffered an injury that has forced him to spend time off the soccer pitch, according to the sports publication The Sunday Guardian. However, the 29-year-old has secured a spot on the France national team and will be doing all he can to heal before the international tournament.
Moises Caicedo

Another young soccer star you can expect to see is 24-year-old Moisés Caicedo. While his base is Chelsea Football Club in London, England, the young soccer star is one of Ecuador’s key players and will be flying the flag of yellow, blue and red stripes when he takes up his role as defensive midfielder to help his home country fight for the trophy in June.
Michael Olise

Being of mixed heritage and having the option to play for both the French and English national teams, Michael Olise, 24, decided to jet toward the Eiffel Tower and will be joining Kylian Mbappé to secure the World Cup crown for France. Having played in 32 matches with the German soccer club Bayern Munich this year, Olise has scored 15 goals and provided 19 assists. He is no doubt saving the best of his skills for the tournament this summer.
Nuno Mendes

Most days, Nuno Mendes, 23, is a left-back for the French soccer club Paris Saint-Germain, but this summer, Mendes will be expected to take up defense for his home country, Portugal. While the full lineup for the Portuguese team has not yet been announced, Mendes, who is often regarded as one of the most talented left-backs in the world, is considered to already have his space on the starting squad, according to Sports Mole.
Antonio Rüdiger

If you see Antonio Rüdiger on the pitch, then you know things have gotten serious. The 33-year-old is a veteran of Team Germany, known for a rough style that prevents opponents from getting in the way of his team’s victory. According to ESPN, soccer was Rüdiger’s ticket out of the rough streets of Berlin, and it’s the training on those hostile Berlin streets that made him the skilled, tough player he is today.
Cody Gakpo

Leaving the northern England city of Liverpool, 27-year-old Cody Gakpo will be heading home to join the Netherlands national team. A versatile and precise soccer player, Gakpo was widely heralded as one of the Netherlands’ breakout stars and leading players during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. We’re sure he’ll bring that same leading energy to this year’s tournament.
Virgil van Dijk

Cody Gakpo won’t be leaving Liverpool alone. Joining him to play for Team Netherlands will be Virgil van Dijk, 34. The Dutch athlete is a stellar player. He is captain of both the Netherlands and Liverpool, making him the most important player for the Dutch team. Although he is a master in defense, van Dijk still knows how to strike when the iron is hot and has been responsible for six incredible goals among the 37 matches he has played this season.
Ousmane Diomande

Ousmane Diomande, 22, will be one of Ivory Coast’s key players during this summer’s tournament. Diomande also plays in the Portuguese league, Primeira Liga, for Sporting CP and has been regarded as one of the best center-backs among European soccer’s current rising stars. Taking his skills to the Ivory Coast national team, Diomande may have a shot at making the African nation proud and helping them secure a history-making victory this summer.
Jeremy Doku

Jeremy Doku, 23, will be leaving his teammates at Manchester City Football Club and waving the Belgian flag this summer. Doku is an important member of the Belgian national team, having secured them a spot in the tournament by scoring two outstanding goals during the World Cup qualifiers at the end of last year, according to Manchester City.
