Another Election Fraud Speech? Expert Says Trump Is Setting the Stage for a Bigger Midterm Showdown

President Donald Trump has been teasing what he calls a “really big” speech on election integrity, promising revelations about voter fraud, voting machines and foreign interference in a primetime address Thursday (July 16). While most Americans are concerned about affordability and the ongoing war in Iran, the president seems to be on a different page. But before he steps to the podium tonight, some political observers argue they already know his playbook.

Nicole Robinson, a law expert and commenter, predicts Trump will discuss “newly declassified intelligence documents about the 2020 election, and maybe he’ll be talking about new information regarding voting machine vulnerabilities and foreign interference. It’s also likely that he’ll be rehashing, for the millionth time, the 2020 election.”

If that’s the strategy, other experts say this could be a great opportunity for the president to speak on one of his biggest concerns: election fraud.

“The President will most likely talk about the FBI’s raids. All kinds of nutty stuff happened there, obviously,” Matt Kittle, “The Federalist” Elections Correspondent, told KTHR News. “This is a huge priority. The number one domestic priority. It’s right up there with getting inflation under control and the economy.”

Still, critics say the political consequences of Trump’s speech are risky.

“The stakes with this speech are very, very big,” Robinson said. “Every time President Trump is involved in a campaign… he starts with laying the groundwork that the election will be rigged.”

This pattern stretches back more than a decade. Trump claimed before the 2016 election against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that the race would be “rigged” if he lost. After winning, he falsely argued voter fraud cost him the popular vote. During the 2020 campaign, he predicted the only way he would lose to former President Joe Biden was through fraud–a narrative that preceded the Jan. 6 Insurrection.

Yet election officials, court rulings, independent studies, audits and recounts–including reviews by officials in Trump’s own administration–found no evidence of widespread voter fraud that would have changed the outcome of the 2020 election, according to PBS.

“Now that he’s in office, he’s doing the same thing all over again,” Robinson added. “He’s been sending all of these executive orders related to elections and trying to spread this myth that non-citizens are voting… all these things that we know to not be true.”

Robinson warned Americans to pay close attention to “any indication that [Trump’s] trying to intimidate voters from participating in the process,” during his speech. “Remember that we have laws on the books to protect American citizens for that very reason.”

So what’s even left to rehash about the 2020 election in 2026?

Passing the SAVE America Act– Trump’s voter integrity bill– is the president’s top priority ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, we previously told you. According to Robinson, revisiting the haunting 2020 election is less about the past and more about setting the stage for the future.

“Tonight’s speech will probably be about sowing seeds of doubt in the minds of American voters,” she said, arguing Trump is “laying the groundwork for the midterms” in anticipation that Democrats could regain control of Congress.

If Democrats can secure at least the House come November, they’d be positioned to launch formal investigations into Trump, his cabinet and even his family. “That’s what the Democratic Party is. The left in general is interested in power, and only interested in power,” Kittle said. “They hate Donald Trump because he stands in the way of their power.”

As Trump continues to face the possibility of a November loss, it seems some Republicans are also feeling the heat.

According to POLITICO, several Republicans have expressed skepticism ahead of Trump’s speech, including one former Trump administration official who said many GOP leaders are “scared sh**less” about what Trump will say tonight.

Robinson contends Republicans are rightfully afraid, especially if Trump’s message is out of step with voters’ priorities.

“If Trump is planning to sit there and rehash the 2020 election, that is a losing argument,” the analyst told us. “Right now, what everyday Americans are concerned about is affordability.”

As far as election fraud goes, Trump’s claims of dead people’s votes being counted and migrants illegally casting their votes have been rejected by experts. His attempts to get rid of mail-in ballots were also rejected by the Supreme Court last month.

So as viewers watch the speech, Robinson urged them to separate rhetoric from reality.

“They might need to block out some of the lies,” she said, warning that Trump could repeat claims about mail-in voting or voter fraud that have repeatedly been debunked by courts and election officials. “People should still continue to volunteer at polling places, vote by mail and register to vote.”
