After Being ‘Dead’ For Three Days, Billy Porter Shares Update on His Health

Billy Porter has been through a lot over the last year, especially when it comes to his health. But now, it looks like things have finally taken a turn for the better!

In March, we told you how the “Pose” star finally opened up about the shocking health emergency that left him “dead” for three days. After initially going to the doctor’s office for a routine check-up, they discovered a kidney stone “trapped in [his] urethra.” Due to the amount of internal debris that was trapped inside, he quickly became “uroseptic.”

Urosepsis is described as “sepsis caused by infections of the urinary tract, including cystitis, or lower urinary tract and bladder infections, and pyelonephritis, or upper urinary tract and kidney infections,” according to the National Library of Medicine. This, in turn, led to Porter essentially dying for three days and clinging to a life support machine to stay alive.

Now, speaking in a new interview with “CBS Mornings” about his long-awaited return to the stage in “La Cage Aux Folles,” Porter shared an update on his health after all this time. And thankfully, the update was one fans will be happy to hear.

“I’ve gotten through the sepsis. It’s very emotional for me. My leg and my foot were compromised. And even to look at that video [from rehearsal] makes me really emotional. I’m so grateful to be alive. I’m so grateful to be back,” he said to host Gayle King.

Explaining how the sepsis diagnosis has given him a “new lease on life,” Porter expressed his gratitude at being at this stage in his health now and finally getting back to a place where he can keep working regularly.

“I am alive. And when you’re confronted with mortality—this has been a really interesting moment for me. But I’m back. Blessed, booked, busy, all of the above. I’m working more than ever before, and I’m grateful to be alive. My work isn’t finished on this earth,” he later explained to CBS Mornings.

Porter later went on to express his excitement about his upcoming role in the musical, in which he stars opposite Wayne Brady. The musical will have a limited run, beginning June 17-28, with Porter describing it as “all-Black, Queer joy.” Additionally, as noted by PEOPLE, Porter is also preparing to film a role in the next “Hunger Games” installment as well as launch a podcast with comedians Leslie Jones and Phoebe Robinson.
