For months, the phone calls from Field Elementary School kept coming, each one detailing the unusual, distressed behavior of Semaj Lee. Sensing that something was deeply wrong behind the closed doors of the special education classroom, his Louisville parents decided to force answers out of a system that wasn’t giving them any.

“As his mother, I knew in my heart something was not right,” Tiphanee Lee told local news outlet WDRB. Her 7-year-old son, Semaj, had been getting in trouble at school for about two weeks. Lee requested to sit in the classroom to observe her son’s behavior, but WLKY reported that her request was denied.

Driven by a desperate search for the truth, Lee turned to an unconventional method. On May 13, she hid a secret camera in Semaj’s dreadlocks “to be my son’s eyes, his ears, his voice,” she told WDRB. After reviewing the recording, the mother called the footage nothing short of “unacceptable,” claiming the hidden lens exposed a staff member actively mistreating her son while other adults stood by.

“What I discovered on the camera footage is something no parent should ever see or hear,” Lee said. “Our child was put in a situation where he was scared, overwhelmed and powerless.”

Because the camera was concealed, the video—which can be viewed here—does not clearly show the interactions between Semaj and his teachers. The audio, however, is clear. The recording appears to capture an assistant teacher aggressively yelling at the autistic student.

“While this was happening there was adults in the room who did nothing to stop it. This is unacceptable,” Lee alleged. At the end of the clip, Semaj can be heard screaming. Semaj was sent home early around midday after school staff reportedly discovered the hidden camera and alerted the principal, according to WLKY.

Now, a “heartbroken” and “deeply disturbed” Lee is demanding accountability from the district.

According to WLKY, the school’s principal, Deb Rivera, sent a letter to parents on May 14 regarding a social media post making allegations about a staff member. The letter stated, in part: “While I am unable to comment on actions regarding personnel, I want to assure you that we take these allegations seriously and are reviewing this incident with the district.”

During a May 15 press conference hosted by Metro Council members Tammy Hawkins and Andrew Owens, Lee said, “No parent should have to question whether their child is safe at school. No child should suffer in silence because they can’t speak.”
