Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Calls Out ‘Weaponization of Religion’ in a Powerful New Interview
At a time when some actors choose to avoid discussing hot-button topics like religion and politics, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is leaning in – and the message he has to share is one that this country definitely needs to hear.
Mateen’s words come as part of a new, lengthy interview he gave to Variety, in which he reflected on his already busy year. As we previously told you, the New Orleans-born actor starred in two major projects: Marvel’s “Wonder Man” and the recently released Netflix drama, “Man on Fire.”
In addition to talking all about his projects and career trajectory, Mateen also took the time to speak on the weaponization of religion and the villainization of Muslims in this country. The “Aquaman” star grew up in a dual-faith household. His father was a Muslim and his mother a Christian. Seeing as how they were able to come together, Mateen called out people in this country who refuse to do so and instead use religion as a shield for their own quests for power and greed. He emphasized that both religions are rooted in principles of love.
“These are not religious problems. These are human problems. We’re dealing with greed. We’re dealing with human qualities. What I was taught about Islam and what I learn when I turn to my Bible, I’m learning about peace. I’m learning about love. I’m learning about minding your own business,” Mateen explained.
He went on to say that the force that is leading some people to use religion as a weapon to harm, “conquer and feed off power,” is contrary to the God that he believes in, who is all about peace and acceptance.
“The truth of what’s going on is we have human beings and people in power fighting for more power, using religion as a guise,” Mateen said. “If they’re being led by the desire to conquer and feed off power, which is against the spirit of generosity, love and peace, they can’t be led by the God that I have a relationship with. It’s impossible. They’re being led by something completely different.”
