What We Know About Nolan Wells: the High School Football Star Found Dead Days After July 4th Trip

Just days ago, Nolan Xavier Wells was celebrating the Fourth of July surrounded by friends in Mississippi. By Monday, his life was cut devastatingly short when search-and-rescue teams located the 18-year-old’s body on the northwest end of Horn Island. Now, investigators are working to piece together the final moments of the high school football star’s holiday weekend, as his devastated family is left demanding answers about the tragic turn of events.

Nolan Wells’ mother, Christine Wonsley, reported him missing late Saturday night after he failed to return from a Fourth of July trip to the island with friends on a small boat, according to Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter via WLOX. Wonsley took to social media to desperately plead for information regarding her son’s whereabouts.

Wells was last seen on Saturday, July 4, around 3 p.m. on Horn Island, a barrier island about 10 miles from the Gulf Coast. Because the National Park Service designates the island as a protected wilderness area, it remains entirely free of commercial development—reachable only by those with a private boat.

“[The friends] left [Horn Island] and went back without Nolan,” Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said, according to ABC News. “From what we understand, he chose to stay there.”

The sheriff’s department launched a search for Wells, who played football at Ocean Springs High School and Southwest Mississippi Community College, on foot, planes and boats. Two days later, a body was recovered authorities said matched Wells’ description. His family and the Ocean Springs School District confirmed that the body found on Horn Island was that of the 18-year-old, WKRG 5 reported.

A photo shared with police showed Wells, who is Black, smiling with three white friends on a boat that afternoon.

“His father, our family, friends and I are absolutely devastated,” Christine Wonsley wrote on Facebook. “My heart [is] broken for my sweet son who was always willing to cheer and uplift others. Nolan was a special soul, God took his time creating our son.”

Jake Bramlett, Ocean Springs head football coach, called Wells “the kind of son, teammate, friend and student that every coach hopes to have in a program… He carried himself with humility, treated others with respect, worked hard and led by example. His character spoke louder than his accomplishments, and he was loved deeply by his teammates and coaches.”

While the sheriff noted that investigators suspect no foul play and believe the teenager drowned, the official investigation remains active.
