NBC Speaks After ‘TODAY Show’ Security Breach Targeting Craig Melvin

NBC is speaking out after the shocking and scary intruder incident that transpired during Thursday’s episode of the “TODAY Show” and specifically targeted cohost Craig Melvin. And believe us when we say, this entire ordeal is shocking to learn about.

Things all went down around 9 a.m. earlier on Thursday. During that time is when an unarmed intruder went through a stairwell and popped up at the famous daytime talk show, pushing past security while reportedly looking for veteran cohost Al Roker, according to local law enforcement statements obtained by TMZ. The man reportedly made it all the way backstage near the dressing rooms before he ran into Melvin.

Afterwards, he tried to engage the TV show host in a physical altercation by lunging at him and calling him the n-word. Thankfully, neither of the men was harmed, and the unidentified man was subsequently arrested without further incident.

Now, NBC has officially put out a statement confirming the aforementioned events and assuring its audience that the safety of its employees, talent, and guests comes first. They also said that they’d be conducting a review of the incident and that, per the NYPD, the investigation is ongoing. Variety also noted that the incident was not caught on camera.

“An individual entered an unauthorized area in a vestibule near Studio 1A. The person approached anchor Craig Melvin, who alerted security,” NBC News said. “The individual was detained and taken into custody by law enforcement without further incident. There was no altercation, and no one was injured.”

The statement continued: “NBC and ‘Today’ take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously. We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios.”

Perhaps what’s even more impressive is that Melvin and his co-hosts all went on to film the rest of the morning’s show as if nothing ever happened, with him specifically appearing unfazed as he interviewed Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland about their new film, “The Odyssey.”

Melvin nor Roker has yet to share their two cents about the incident, but when they do, trust and believe we’ll update you. However, it may be a while, before Melvin says anything, as he’s scheduled to be absent from the show for a week and a half beginning July 20.
