Michelle Obama Shares Story Behind Her Famous 2004 DNC Look

Former First Lady Michelle Obama has given us some iconic looks throughout the years, both while in and out of the White House. But before she had a team of stylists to help her slay every outfit, she was just a regular mom looking for outfits to show up in support of her up-and-coming politician husband and future president of the United States, Barack Obama. And if you want to know how she managed to style herself, we have you covered.

Recently, a podcast episode of “Behind the Look” that Michelle Obama did with Farah Jasmine Griffin and Nina Garcia has resurfaced on TikTok. In the episode, Obama delves into the start of her husband’s political career and how she coped with having to show up at his side for events such as the 2004 DNC, all while being a mother of two.

“My life before the White House… was very much the life of a working mother with a partner who traveled often. I had a full-time big job; I had two little girls,” she said. “My husband decided that he was going to be a politician, which was like, ‘Oh my god, really? Can you pick just one other career?’”

However, being the supportive wife she is, the former First Lady did what she could to show up beside her hubby.

“It was maybe a week before the [Democratic National Convention] where I realized, oh, I’ve gotta go with him and then I’ve gotta go on stage with him afterwards and be the loving wife and wave. I was like, ‘Oh my god, I have nothing to wear,’” she said.

So, Obama found herself having to run to Bloomingdale’s during her work lunch break to find what would be her iconic white 2004 DNC outfit.

“I just happened upon this beautiful taffeta suit. It was white, but it had a sheen to it and I thought this could be pretty. It could pop on a stage of primarily blue. But this was all done within an hour,” she added.

Having found the outfit she liked, she tried it on with a couple of other options but ultimately settled on the all-white suit after discovering it was a perfect fit—it was a fashion miracle

The 2004 Democratic National Convention was held in Boston and was one of the events that first launched Barack Obama’s career as more than a local politician, but a national one with the smarts and charisma to become a future president. In his keynote speech, Obama received generous applause after delivering a speech about unity and the American dream that allows all to reach their fullest potential.

With Michelle Obama supporting him wholeheartedly in a classy, elegant outfit that night, the Obama family became one of America’s next iconic political families.

“I wasn’t really thinking about color; I wasn’t making all the decisions that we would later make as first lady about colors and background. You know, I just wasn’t in that mindset,” she said. “It was really instinctive. It was the cut of it. The color worked with my complexion. It would feel sophisticated but not too elevated. There were little subtle things in my mind, but there was no strategy.”

In the TikTok comments, people loved hearing the story and were in awe of the outfit she chose.

“God, I loved that speech!!! She was absolutely magnetic. What a life-changing moment,” exclaimed one user.

“She is the real deal. Best First Lady in my lifetime,” wrote another.

“So what you’re saying is you just have good taste. I love her,” added a third.

Others commented that they knew from Barack Obama’s 2004 DNC speech that he would become president one day.

“I will never forget watching that speech live, having never seen him before, and being absolutely blown away. We were so lucky to have the Obamas,” wrote one commenter.

“My mother watched that speech and said he’s going to be president one day,” added another.
