13 Rappers Who Are Way Smarter Than Your Average CEO
Although hip-hop has been part of mainstream culture for over decades, there are still many who often fall for the stereotype that the genre is filled with shallow and uneducated rappers and music. What they often fail to mention, however, is the long list of educated rappers who continue to dominate the industry.
From KRS-One and Nas to Cardi B and Rapsody, here’s our list of some of the smartest rap icons of all time… and these are just a few of the countless talented and intelligent hip-hop stars.
Nas

There’s a reason why Nas is known as the Poet Laureate of Queensbridge! The New York City rapper has spent decades proving his wits through lyrical gems like “Illmatic” and “King’s Disease” trilogy, but even outside of his profound raps, Nas’ career as a venture capitalist and keen investor continues to shock the hip-hop world.
In 2013, he also made history when Harvard University announced the Nasir Jones Hip Hop Fellowship, the first academic fellowship named after a rapper. Most recently, Nas joined Resort World’s $5 billion casino expansion this year, which will transform the casino into a Las Vegas-style affair.
J. Cole

J. Cole is more than your typical rap star. Coming from humble beginnings, the North Carolina native took the college route, even when many of his peers didn’t. He graduated from St. John’s University with a 3.8 GPA, as he often brags about in his songs.
College doesn’t automatically make you smart, of course. But Cole has displayed a level of intellect throughout his career that is often overshadowed by his knack for storytelling. With mentors like Jay-Z and idols like Nas and Tupac, it’s clear that Cole is not only a student of the rap game, but he’s also a student of history.
Talib Kweli

Talib Kweli rose to prominence with the rise of the Black Star duo with Mos Def– who’s an intelligent rapper in his own right! Kweli is celebrated as one of hip-hop’s most socially conscious lyricists, which is demonstrated in his focus on Black empowerment and complex rhyme schemes.
Kendrick Lamar

There’s no way we were going to make this list without giving credit to Compton’s own Kendrick Lamar, who was awarded a 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Music for his album, “DAMN.”
Throughout his career, Lamar has also set himself apart from his peers with his analytical storytelling and overall thematic depth. Albums like “Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers” and “Good Kid, M.A.A.D City” explore themes of overcoming generational trauma, battling one’s faith and greater societal issues impacting the Black community.
Rapsody

Rapsody is more than likely on your favorite rapper’s favorite list! Despite her being criminally underrated, Rapsody is well-respected across industries for her decades-long career, which started with a breakthrough feature on Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp a Butterfly” album. If you listen to any song where Rapsody is featured, you’d be hit immediately with her outstanding lyricism and intricate flows. She’s bound to give you a history lesson in only eight bars.
Jay-Z

They call him the goat for a reason, right?
Since exploding onto the rap scene with “Reasonable Doubt” in 1996, Jay has amassed countless awards, accolades and honors all because of his lyricism, storytelling ability and sharp rap skills. Outside of music, Jay is a billionaire from his countless business ventures and investments. We previously told you Hov has had his hands in everything from cannabis and vegan bakeries to sports teams and an expansive real estate portfolio, which he shares with his wife, Beyoncé.
Noname

As a critically acclaimed rapper, poet and activist, Noname is known for her sharp lyricism and often introspective blends with jazz production. She got her start in the Chicago slam poetry scene, and she’s been killing it ever since. Noname is never afraid to spark debates, which was evident in a brief back and forth with J. Cole during the height of the 2020 Black Lives Matter Protests.
Still, outside of this, Noname has her own book club, where she encourages all people, especially Black folks, to join the conversation and learn something new.
KRS-One

The legendary KRS-One is just as much of a rapper as he is a philosopher. He’s even referred to as “The Teacha,” in celebration of his widely recognized conscious lyrics and advocacy. His name literally means “Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone,” and that doesn’t show his dedication to education and the Black community, then we don’t know what does!
Killer Mike

One-half of iconic rap duo, “Run The Jewels,” Atlanta’s own Killer Mike has transformed his music career into one built on political advocacy and Black empowerment.
Most recently, he teamed up with dozens of other rappers to urge the Supreme Court to stay the scheduled execution of a Black man who was found guilty partially based on his rap lyrics. Mike is also often featured on news platforms like CNN and Fox Business, where he provides insightful commentary on systemic issues.
Cardi B

No one has ever had a come-up like Cardi B. Despite never going to college, Cardi has solidified herself as one of the most intelligent rap stars of the 21st century. She rose from social media fame and reality TV and has now become one of the biggest stars in the world.
Music aside, Cardi uses her platform to educate the public and the ins and outs of the political world. She’s sat down for interviews with folks like Sen. Bernie Sanders and has been praised by folks like NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani and former Vice President Kamala Harris.
Now, if we’re talking business, Cardi is also at the top of her game! From deals with Fashion Nova and Reebok to her most recent success in the form of her new haircare line, it’s clear that Cardi is more than just her catchy lyrics and funny personality.
Jadakiss

Jadakiss is often recognized as one of hip-hop’s smartest and most skilled lyricists. He’s a Yonkers native and an integral part of The LOX, and despite decades passing, it doesn’t seem like Jada has ever lost his technical skills. That was more than evident in The LOX’s Verzuz battle against Dipset.
Ice Cube

If we’re talking transformations, then few rappers could really go toe to toe with Ice Cube. It takes intelligence and guts to be able to transition from making explicit gangster rap music in the ’80s and ’90s to becoming a loving family actor, with acting roles in “Are We There Yet” and “War of the Worlds.”
To his credit, Cube has always been a socially conscious rapper who was never afraid to voice frustrations with the police and even white supremacy. It’s his audacity to speak on the most controversial topics from an educated perspective that leads him to this list.
Megan Thee Stallion

There aren’t too many global rap stars who also juggling being a full-time student. But in the case of Houston native Megan Thee Stallion, getting her degree was mandatory, and in 2021, she walked the stage as a Texas Southern University graduate.
Throughout her career, Megan has maintained her brand using savvy business investments and historic collaborations. Like many on this list, Meg owns her recording masters and continues to do the work to create wealth for her future.
