Zaya Wade Talks About Adjusting to College Life and Being Away From Her Famous Parents
Zaya Wade is all grown up and entering her young adult era. Now she’s opening up about how she’s been adjusting to college life and how things have been since she’s been away from her parents, Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union.
It was previously revealed that the college freshman would be majoring in astrobiology, though details have yet to come out about where Zaya decided to go. (She and her parents did go on a tour at the University of Washington in Seattle in 2024, however.)
Now that she’s 18 and officially ingrained in the college culture, Zaya admitted that spending time away from her family has been “really hard,’ but that it’s helped push her to meet new people.
“Being away from your parents is hard. It’s really hard, but also it’s exciting, and it’s fun, and it’s freeing, and I think I’ve learned to get out of my shell a lot more and be more sociable,” she recently told E! News at the second annual Translatable Ball.
“I feel like I can go up to people that I’ve never met and just strike up a conversation. I think I’m just starting to connect with people more, and I think that’s what college is about, just connection,” she explained.
Zaya shared that aside from making good on her dad’s hilarious advice that she “not mess it up” while attending school, she’s also focused on learning more about herself and figuring out how to navigate this new phase in life.
But don’t get it twisted, Zaya’s parents are already proud of who she’s become. Dwyane recently told E! that he’s constantly learning from his daughter and is impressed at the innate courage she possesses.
“Zaya has just shown us an incredible understanding of courage and what it looks like to feel safe and feel protected. All the things that we all want and all strive for, that we all are working hard to find, to see her understand that she has it and to really blossom and bloom in it, it gives you hope,” Dwyane said at the Translatable Ball. “I’m a fan of my daughter.”
