Wife of Kansas City Chiefs Coach Believed to Have Been Shot By 27-Year-Old Son in Domestic Dispute

As Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was preparing for another NFL season at training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, a horrific domestic tragedy was quietly unfolding hundreds of miles away involving his wife and his 27-year-old son.

On a quiet Sunday evening in Ashburn, Virginia, deputies from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting at a home in the 20000 block of Northpark Drive, according to ESPN.

When police arrived, they were met with a violent scene. Eric’s wife, 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy, had been shot multiple times in the chest and arm. She was transported to a local hospital where she was listed in stable condition Monday, the Associated Press reported. The suspect now facing multiple felony charges in the attack is her own son, 27-year-old Elijah Zion Bieniemy.

The arrest and the charges were swift. Early Monday, deputies took Elijah into custody, booking him on malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling charges.

The couple’s son now sits inside a cell at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center while the Bieniemy family, and the NFL community, reels from the shock.

“Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family. Thoughts and prayers with them,” Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said, per NFL.com. “I can’t get into details on it, but things happen sometimes, and Eric will work through it. He has a great support group here, as does his family, as needed, and we’ll just let time take care of it from there. But Mia is stable, which is a plus.”

Reid, who has been the Chiefs’ head coach for 13 years, called Mia “a saint” and “one of God’s great blessings.” He added: “But things happen. And you have to work through it. That’s where we’re at right now. Time will have to be involved in this to help heal.”

Eric was not present for Monday’s workout, and Reid did not know how long Bieniemy would be away from the team. The sheriff’s office said the investigation was ongoing.
