Why This Ice Cream-Eating Crossing Guard Is the Latest Viral Social Media Sensation
It was the middle of a chaotic afternoon in Philadelphia when a stolen utility truck barreled into an empty elementary school’s playground. But no need to fear, a Black crossing guard is near!
He not only came to the rescue, but after the dust settled, he gave a hilarious play-by-play of the ordeal to NBC 10 that has turned him into an overnight sensation.
Police said Robert Littlepage of Douglasville, Georgia, tried to carjack a woman on the 6300 block of Grays Avenue, but after a failed attempt he stole a white utility truck that was still running nearby, NBC 10 Philadelphia reported. In an attempt to flee, the 18-year-old suspect ran a red light at 55th Street and Kingsessing Avenue before crashing. The utility truck overturned on the playground of S. Weir Mitchell Elementary School.
Enter Jamele Ransom, a crossing guard who witnessed the crash. In a local TV interview that could easily be a scene from “Abbott Elementary,” Ransom described what he saw— while simultaneously enjoying a vanilla ice cream cone he refused to put down.
“He ran the red light, t-boned the lady,” Ransom said, wearing a yellow safety vest, sunglasses and a crossing guard hat cocked to the side like T.I. from the early 2000s. “I’m bobbing and weaving. I’m just thankful. Thankful to be alive right now. Thank you, Jesus.”
In what has already been described as the “interview of the year,” Ransom continued, recalling how he pulled a child from one of the vehicles after the crash. “I grab a kid out, because he’s stuck, frantic, pull him out. Ain’t nobody in there. Guy’s in there. He’s trapped in there. Then I run out and get myself together because my heart is boom, boom, boom, boom,” he said between ice cream licks.
Fortunately, no children were harmed in the incident. Littlepage was arrested and will be charged with attempted carjacking, aggravated assault and other related offenses. Meanwhile, Ransom’s interview has turned into social media gold.
“I thought this was a skit,” one person in NBC 10 Philadelphia’s comments wrote. A second added: “This is an A+ interview, Philly style,” while a third said: “I see him all the time. he a good crossing guard. he be dancing the whole time lol and be waving at everybody. he has the best energy! one of the best crossing guards.”
The reaction to the interview, which has been viewed over 10 million times, continued over on X.
“Give this guy a mic and an ice cream cone and put him everywhere. TV, movies, stand up, all of it,” one person wrote. “I want him to explain everything to me. I want to see him bobbing and weaving while he gives me the weather report.”
Another added: “Moments like this remind you that everyday heroes don’t always look ‘cinematic’… sometimes they just look like someone doing what needs to be done.”
“This guy can capture your attention and keep it while telling a story. I was on the edge of the set [sp],” another X user said.
Proving not all heroes wear capes, Ransom now joins the social media Hall of Fame of TV local interviews! In 2010, Antoine Dobson warned NBC WAFF-4 viewers to, “Hide yo kids, hide yo wife,” and don’t forget about hiding husbands either after an attempted assault in his Huntsville, Alabama, home.
Two years later, Kimberly “Sweet Brown” Wilkins escaped from an apartment fire in Oklahoma City, telling KFOR-TV she didn’t grab her shoes because she had bronchitis and, quite frankly, “Ain’t nobody got time for that!”
