Why Obama’s Love For Michelle’s Mother Brought Him to Tears
It’s not that unusual to see former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle sharing emotionally intimate moments. But the one that transpired here recently in Chicago is sure to bring out the tears in even the most stoic among us, just like it did for Barack.
If you haven’t been online or skimming the headlines recently, then you may have missed the news that the Obamas were gearing up to officially open the doors of the new Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. While the opening ceremony was slated for Thursday (June 18), just before it went down, the famous couple spoke at a stakeholder’s reception to help usher in this new era.
And while that event went off without a hitch, the night took a more vulnerable turn when the former First Family got on stage to speak. Michelle went first and, per usual, spoke with her expected eloquence. But it wasn’t her speech necessarily that moved her husband to tears—it was her outfit.

Specifically, Michelle wore “a custom Acne Studios look, based on Look 29 from the brand’s fall/winter 2026 collection,” per USA Today. And what made it so special was that the skirt, in particular, had an image of Michelle’s late mother, Marian Robinson, on it. If you remember, Robinson passed away in May 2024 at 86 years old.
“He’s really messed up,” Michelle said. “I’m giving him some time because this beautiful skirt that my stylist Meredith Koop picked out, that is my favorite portrait of my mom. He didn’t know it existed until just a few minutes ago. I’ve had a few weeks to settle down in the beauty of this skirt, but it’s messing him up for good reason.”
A “good reason” is arguably putting it lightly, as Marian and Barack had a very loving relationship while she was living with them in the White House, affectionately being dubbed the “First Grandma.” Barack has also previously spoken out about his deep appreciation for Marian before, praising her in a 2019 birthday post for always being there for their family, “her steadiness, her perspective, and the way a wisecrack from her reverberates around the room.” He also once described her as “the best mother-in-law anyone could hope for.”
When Robinson passed away, Barack was understandably shaken, remarking in a post to social media at the time that there “was and will be only one Marian Robinson” and that he and the family would “spend the rest of ours trying to live up to her example”
So it’s no wonder why, after wiping his eyes and getting himself together, Barack had warm words to share about Robinson, explaining how much he loved his late mother-in-law and admired and respected her for how honorably she raised his wife.
“I am a little shaken up by this because I loved my mother-in-law, and she made a home for Michelle and Craig, not with a lot. But with a lot of love and hope and perspective. They represent, to me, what’s best about this country,” Barack said, as noted by TODAY.
