Why Black Folks Can’t Get Enough of the Juicy Details Behind Netflix’s ‘A Toxic Love Story’ Drama

Every few weeks, a new Netflix documentary takes over the timelines on social media. This time around, it’s “A Toxic Love Story” that’s taken viewers and specifically Black folks by storm. And believe us when we tell you, there are more than a handful of insane, juicy reasons why!

In a nutshell, this doc centers around disgraced U.S. Marshal Ian Diaz, his ex-girlfriend Michelle Hadley, and Diaz’s fiancée Angela Connell. What started off as a story of a jealous ex looking to make her old flame’s new life a living hell through cyberstalking and an alleged rape attempt turned into something straight out of soap opera land!

There are several major plot twists in this whole thing that you absolutely won’t see coming. And let’s just say, they involve a lot of emails, a sprinkle of Disney fandom, a fake disease, and more. And while we want you to watch it for yourself, we’ve got to talk about the reasons why people are talking, so if you don’t want to see some potential spoilers, now’s the time for you to stop reading!

“‘A Toxic Love Story’ Is What Happens When Two Psychopaths Get Married”

We’re just going to jump right in and tell you that despite how you may feel about everyone involved in the first 30 minutes of the documentary—your feelings are false. You’re not watching what you think you’re watching because Diaz and Connell are not who they seem to be. You have to take the info you first learn about them with a grain of salt because as the documentary continues, you realize how big of liars, grifters, and emotional manipulators the two of them were before they got together and how it all amplified after that. And that’s putting it lightly.

Their joint actions are exactly why TikTok user Reality Curtie described their relationship as what happens when “two deranged psychopaths get married.”

“And the gag is Ian and Angela almost got away with this entire thing for the simple fact that Ian literally drove his ex [Hadley] insane and into a psychosis to the point where she was hospitalized because his stalking and harassment was so intense,” he said.

You’ve Got to Watch the “Best Friend”

Another part of this documentary that had folks baffled was the involvement of Diaz’s years-long coworker-turned-best friend, Leslie. From the beginning, she came across as empathetic to Diaz and the scary emails he was allegedly receiving from Hadley.

She took his side, saw things from his perspective, never doubted his version of the story, and even by the end of the doc—when the real truth of his involvement in the scandal became clear—she was still in denial of him being the bad guy in the situation. When confronted by authorities, Leslie also pushed back on the narrative that she was secretly in love with Diaz and had been, but let viewers tell it, that’s far from being the case.

Leslie and Diaz’s weird dynamic served as a perfect example of why women should never trust the “girl best friend” or “sister” to a man they’re dating, according to TikTok user Zakiya.

“There’s no reason you should be that overly involved in what a man has going on with his wife unless that man is related to you. And even then, that’s no excuse for that—but unless you’re in love with him! Girl, why are you going to the police stations with him, and he’s calling you at four in the morning?” she asked.

She continued: “Shouldn’t no man…shouldn’t nobody be comfortable enough to call me at four in the morning that ain’t my kin. And even my kin better have a good reason to be calling me at four in the morning. He [Diaz] ain’t have no family? He didn’t have somebody [else] he could call? You’re [Diaz] married. Where are the boundaries here? Why is she so overly involved?”

She went on to advise other women that, should they get involved with a man who has a woman best friend, to pay attention to how involved she is in their personal matters.

You Think You Have It Solved–Until You Don’t

For TikTok user JocWatchlist, she couldn’t stop raving about the project due to how unpredictable the plot turned out. At one point, you’re clear: all signs point to Hadley, and you’re happy with yourself. That is, until you realize there’s still 45 minutes left in the documentary, so you already know something isn’t as it seems. And boy is it a whole lot of “somethings” afoot.

“In only an hour and a half, you go through a rollercoaster of a story. I mean, like every 30 minutes, we take a hard left. In the first 30 minutes, I just knew I understood what was going on here and where this was going,” she said. “After about an hour, I was like, ‘oh sh*t, I was completely wrong.’ But by the end we were at a whole different place because this was some crazy sh*t.”
