Why Black Americans Are Loving Viral Punjabi Musician Diljit Dosanjh

It is often said that music can transcend cultures, bridging people all over the world together. That is currently the case with Black Americans who have been loving viral Punjabi musician Diljit Dosanjh.

If you have been on TikTok, then you might have already come across the videos taking over the social media platform of Indian singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh performing his 2026 hit “Morni” on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” The track features a head-bopping drum beat and the groovy sounds of the tumbi, a traditional stringed Punjabi instrument.

But it is not just the music that has Black fans loving Dosanjh’s music online; it is his stage presence as he shows off cultural Punjabi dances like the bhangra, a high-energy dance originating from the Punjab culture in India. While the infectious beat of the tumbi might get people to stop scrolling, the reason Black fans are staying is deeper than just a catchy melody. There is a “soul” in Dosanjh’s vocals that feels familiar; it’s a grit and passion that mirrors the emotive power of R&B.

Iconic vocal coach Cheryl Porter, who has worked with celebrities such as Mariah Carey, Bono and Andrea Bocelli, reacted to Dosanjh’s performance, writing that she is not Punjabi but she felt his music in her soul.

Beyond the voice, there’s the undeniable swag. Whether he’s rocking a traditional tamba or high-end streetwear, Diljit moves with a level of “main character energy” that Black culture has always championed. He doesn’t just perform; he owns the space with a coolness that feels less like a pop star and more like a hip-hop icon.

In the comments, fans wrote that they would love to see more performances from the star.

“Guys hear me out. …… superbowl half time,” wrote one user.

“He could be cursing us out… I am still dancing,” joked another user.

“Do I know what he is saying? Nope but his voice is incredible,” added a third.

However, while Americans might just be catching the wave now, Dosanjh has been creating a solid fan base for himself in the states for a while. In 2023, he made history by becoming the first Punjabi artist to perform a set at Coachella, according to the BBC. Recently, his 2023 performance at the music festival has been gaining traction following his growing stardom in the states.

For the Sikh musician, bringing his music from Indian shores to North America is about much more than growing his fan base. There is historical significance for Dosanjh, which he explained to Jimmy Fallon.

“The stadium we did in Vancouver — in like 1914, when our people came first in Canada they didn’t allow us to come into Canada — and that stadium is just two kilometers away from the Guru Nanak Jahaz Komagata Maru incident,” he said.

According to the City of Vancouver, the Guru Nanak Jahaz Komagata Maru incident occurred when Punjabi passengers aboard a Japanese steamship from Hong Kong named the Komagata Maru were denied entry into the country. This happened despite the passengers having valid travel documents and having paid a $200 head tax for entry.

Continuing, Dosanjh added, “So, yeah, that’s a big thing for us now to have 55,000 people in the one stadium there. It’s just two kilometers. You didn’t allow us to come and now we are here.”

Celebrating how far Indians have come since having to battle against racism and discrimination, Dosanjh emphasized in the interview that the message he is bringing with him now is all about peace and love.
