This Is What Happened When JD Vance Met His Toughest Critics on Daytime TV
Vice President JD Vance showed up to “The View” this week prepared to talk about faith, family and his new book. What he got instead was a masterclass in what happens when a politician enters a room full of women who have absolutely no interest in reading from his talking points.
For nearly an hour, Vance sat across from Whoopi Goldberg, Sunny Hostin, Joy Behar, Sara Haines and Ana Navarro as the conversation repeatedly drifted away from the spiritual themes of his memoir and right back to the Trump administration’s policies and controversies.
Vance has spent years transforming himself from a fierce critic of President Donald Trump to his right-hand man and one of his most loyal defenders. So when he arrived on one of daytime television’s most politically charged stages, the sparks started flying almost immediately.
“For 29 seasons, this show has invited thousands of guests, with all kinds of diverse points of view,” moderator and co-host Whoopi Goldberg told the audience. “And we have been asking our next guest to join us for a while now. So we’re glad that he’s taken us up on the offer today.”
The co-hosts hurled questions about Trump’s response to inflation, the handling of the Epstein files and even the administration’s often strained relationship with minority groups at Vance as he tried his best to keep the conversations light.
At one point, Goldberg called the administration out for removing Black history and Black icons from federal websites and museums.
“What did Black people do to this administration that has allowed it to really stigmatize folks of color?” she began. “It seems that it has been very easy for this administration to remove that and also to denigrate Black folks who have worked their behinds off to get the American dream? I mean, you know better.”
In response, Vance denied that any of Trump’s policies aim to erase Black contributions. Co-host Hostin responded with direct examples.
“I’m talking about Black history getting erased from public spaces,” she said. “Black voter districts are being dismantled. Black leaders are being sidelined from our ranks. Where do Americans of color fit in this vision? Because it doesn’t seem like we fit.”
We previously told you that a Republican-backed gerrymandering effort has resulted in the slashing of majority-Black voting districts, particularly in the South. Experts predict the November midterm elections will result in less Black representation as Republicans try to gain an advantage.
At various points, Vance tried to redirect the conversation toward policy achievements and what he sees as media distortions of the administration. The hosts, meanwhile, kept steering the conversation back to the concerns many of their viewers expressed about Trump’s rhetoric.
“Maybe you don’t believe this coming from me, but I think everyone is welcome to our political coalition,” Vance told the panel. “Frankly, even if you didn’t vote for us, everybody is welcome in our country, so as long as you’re an American citizen with the duties and the legal obligations and rights to be here.”
Supporters of the administration saw a vice president calmly defending his record in hostile territory. Critics, however, saw a polished messenger trying to put a softer face on policies they oppose.
“I’ll say one thing, JD Vance is very skilled at what he does. He’s skilled at giving non answers and cherry picking half truths to answer a question,” wrote someone on X.
Vance addressed Goldberg directly as tensions in the room continued rising. “You say that we’re anti-minority or anti-Black,” he began before she cut him off.
“No, I didn’t say that. I asked,” Goldberg responded. “Don’t start any stuff with me, man. Don’t get me in trouble.” Within minutes, clips of the exchange spread across social media, generating almost as much discussion as Vance’s appearance itself.
