The Truth Behind Druski’s Viral Skit About Black British Actors
Druski has sent the internet into a frenzy yet again. The 31-year-old comedian has never been one to shy away from hot topics, whether it is corrupt megachurch pastors, conservative women in America, or, most recently, Black British actors playing the part of African Americans in Hollywood. Let’s get into it.
If you haven’t watched the skit yet, Druski assumes the role of Sampson Dubois, a successful Black British actor who stars in high-budget films about slavery and gang life with a flawless American accent, all while frequenting Academy Award shows and speaking with a strong British accent behind the scenes.
In the TikTok comments of the skit, folks were in stitches over Druski’s comedic performance, asking questions like “How does he even come up with these?” and writing that “Druski gotta be number one skit creators of all time.” Even Black British actors Damson Idris and Wunmi Mosaku posted laughing emojis in the comedian’s Instagram comments.
However, others pointed out that this skit, like many of Druski’s skits, was about more than just comedy and instead highlighted a conversation that has been happening online for a while now: Why are Black roles in Hollywood being dominated by Black British actors?
TikTok creator @cj_thealchemist felt the skit pointed out how often non-American actors who portray Black Americans on screen can, at the same time, be disrespectful toward African Americans, even while portraying African American history and culture.
Calling out Idris Elba, CJ referenced his 2023 interview with Esquire in which he said he is no longer describing himself as a “Black actor” because he doesn’t want to be “put in a box,” even though he became successful by playing Black Americans.
“Idris Elba is a great and talented actor, but I don’t think he would be in the position that he is in right now if he wasn’t on ‘The Wire’ or ‘American Gangster’ or other Black films or TV shows like that,” he said.
In the comments, one user wrote, “I’m just glad he pointed out how white production companies will gleefully hire black Brits who are not of the African American slave trade or civil rights movement just because they’re cheaper to hire. Black American actors demand to be paid fairly.”
Samuel L. Jackson noted this in 2017, adding that he feels Black British actors are hired more often than Black American actors because they are “cheaper” and “classically trained,” according to the British newspaper, The Metro. This takes away from Black American actors who are fighting for better pay. The tension surrounding the conversation only bubbles more when actors like Cynthia Erivo play historical Black American icons such as Harriet Tubman, but then disconnect from and disrespect Black American culture behind the scenes.
Therefore, the argument is much less about whether Black British actors are “better” because of their classically trained background and revolves more around Hollywood minimizing Black American history to on-screen aesthetics. Hollywood studios often ignore whether an actor feels a responsibility or respect toward the stories and communities they are portraying.
In his TikTok, CJ clarified that not all Black British actors disrespect Black culture. He finished his post by adding that there needs to be a conversation about whether Black British actors who have disrespected Black American culture should benefit from portraying and partaking in the culture.
Chuckling at the skit, TikTok creator @ojdacritic added she hopes everyone, including the Black British community, is laughing at Druski’s skit and not taking it to heart because the conversation doesn’t mean that Black Americans don’t still welcome Black British actors into Black Hollywood.
“Obviously, the Black community has wrapped their arms around John Boyega, David Oyelowo, Daniel Kaluuya, Idris Elba, Damson Idris, all of that. We love them,” she said. “I love the conversations this man brings up; I don’t want to say starts because the conversation about European Black actors playing Black American actors has been happening for a minute. But I love that he has made it so funny.”
In the TikTok comments, folks added that even though the skit is funny, they were also sad that African Americans aren’t getting as many roles as the Black Brits.
“It’s funny but sad at the same time Druski is exposing how Hollywood is replacing Black American actors with Black British actors,” wrote one user.
“I love Idris, so I was caught off guard at first. But then I had to laugh. Because Black American actor should play their own,” added another.
Another user commented that British actors have been dominating Hollywood for a long time: “It’s not just black people, look how many Marvel heroes are British, even freaking Spiderman. British people love to cosplay as Americans.”

of course it is, it’s about black actors is film
