The Full Breakdown of That Heart-to-Heart Between Rihanna and Today Show’s Sheinelle Jones

Seeing as how the 2026 Met Gala is a star-studded affair, it makes sense for there to be a handful of selected press on the red carpet, vying for interviews from those famous faces. However, what “TODAY Show” cohost Sheinelle Jones received from Rihanna while working there was way more than that and folks online can’t get enough of their encounter!

As we previously told you, Jones has had a challenging year. In May 2025, she lost the love of her life and husband of 17 years, Uche Ojeh, to a rare form of brain cancer. This, in turn, led her to taking some major time away from the show to grieve alongside their three children.

After coming back that September, she slowly began getting back in the daytime TV groove. As the year came to a close, Jones ended it on somewhat of a high note after it was announced she’d be replacing Hoda Kotb as the permanent co-anchor of the 10 o’clock hour of the “TODAY Show” alongside Jenna Bush Hager.

However, tragedy would strike once again as she shared with her followers and fans that her beloved grandmother passed away on New Year’s Eve. Yet and still, Jones was pushing forward, still showing up for her new show, and doing it all with both a level of gracious professionalism and admirable transparency.

Taking all of that into consideration then, it’s not surprising that she would be working and getting good interviews at this year’s Met Gala. But what had her and fans watching shook in the best way was when she crossed paths with Rihanna.

Instead of getting into a standard interview, the “ANTI” singer decided to flip the script and ask Jones how her day was going, putting the focus on her instead.

“So, what was your day like today?” Rih asked.

Jones replied, “Today was, honestly—hoping that I could meet the moment and catch somebody’s eye contact. So many people, when they’re on the carpet, it’s take, take, take. My goal was to give back, because I feel like your talent gives to us.”

That’s when Rih decided to show Jones some love in the sweetest way.

“Well, you deserve to be poured into, as well. It’s not all about giving into everybody. You deserve to be poured into and you’re beautiful. You’re a Black journalist. And I respect you. I love you for this. And, by the way, your outfit is f*cking fire,” the singer said before walking away.

Speaking on Tuesday about the encounter on “Jenna & Sheinelle,” Jones said of the “We Found Love” singer in part: ” I felt like there are certain people who, I told you yesterday, who are almost like the soundtrack to your life, right?…Rihanna’s music has been there for me in so many moments. So when I saw her, I wanted to tell her that. But she was so busy pouring back into me!”

Once the video began making the rounds on social media, fans couldn’t help but feel all the feels.

“She needed that boost, cause she has held it together, through good and bad. We see you too Sheinelle Jones,” said one user on X/Twitter.

“‘She was so busy pouring back into me’ gets me. some people give everything to the room. Rihanna operates on her own frequency,” wrote another.

One other user said, “I love that Riri lifts women up, especially her own.”

Added another: “I’m sure this meant so much especially during a time where journalists at large & especially Black journalists are being laid off & undervalued.”
