The Black Church Enters ‘AI is the Apocalypse’ Debate
Even AI company CEOs and employees are publicly pleading for regulation to save humanity—or else. But here is the ultimate plot twist: while coders sound the alarm on an impending AI apocalypse, a growing number of Christians are noticing the terrifying patterns of rogue behavior as evidence of prophesies written in the Bible 2,000 years ago: the arrival of the Antichrist, while others say AI is a tool used to deceive the masses who are none the wiser.
From the open letter signed by over 1,000 AI employees to heads of companies speaking out, the fear isn’t far fetched. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, told the United Nations security council Wednesday that “AI could be a risk to humanity as a whole.”
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman agreed. “AI can either be more like a new renaissance of creativity and discovery, or more like a new industrial revolution of upheaval and disarray,” he added.
However, for the Black church, that impending doom is nothing to be surprised about. For Pastor Otha Turnbough, senior pastor of Lionheart Church in Austell, Georgia, Amodei and Altman’s warnings were already laid out plainly in the Bible—and he used scripture to make the correlation.
“In Daniel 12:4, the angel told Daniel that his vision of end time events would happen when people would move with speed and there would be an explosion of knowledge. An angel could not tell him it would be a time of technology and it would be a time of artificial intelligence because that did not exist back then. […] What he [the angel] was talking about was the time of technology and the rise of AI,” Pastor Otha explained.

Seven trumpets will sound.
And Jesus Christ will descend from His throne to welcome His followers into heaven for eternity. And the start of His return will begin with AI.
Because AI can mimic human thought and voices, Christian leaders warn that it can be exploited to distort scripture and erode the truth as users often treat AI, a left-leaning platform, as objective and all-knowing.

But not all Christian leaders believe AI is the Antichrist itself. Some preachers in the Black Church cite biblical texts like Revelation 13—which describes a speaking, breathing image of the beast. That beast they believe will use AI for widespread, and unstoppable, global deception as it becomes user’s digital companions, their go-to source for advice and emotional support, and in extreme cases, their spouses.
“Yes, AI could be linked to some type of world government,” Gary Bauer, senior vice president of Public Policy and Culture at JDFI, said. “If that is true, we may want to heavily regulate AI or try to stop it entirely. […] But stopping any technology has never worked in history.”
AI agents are increasingly demonstrating deceptive behavior to bypass human restrictions to achieve their goals, and hacking into third-party databases on its own. The Root told you how some 1,400 AI company employees signed an open letter in May pleading for the regulation of Big Tech.
“But God’s Word tells us repeatedly that giving into fear, being paralyzed by it or forgetting that He is our strength, must always be rejected. “Fear not” is one of the most frequent commands in the Bible,” Bauer added. “I recommend we spend less time listening to doomsday talking heads on TV and much more time in God’s Word.”
