Sugar Ray Leonard Speaks Out After His Son’s Shocking Arrest
Boxing great Sugar Ray Leonard is opening up and clearing the air about the incident that led to his son’s arrest one week ago. The details surrounding the event are heartbreaking.
We previously told you that Leonard’s son Daniel tried to enter his dad’s West Los Angeles home, which then tipped off Ray’s in-house security team and led to his eventual arrest. Daniel was apparently violating a restraining order that his father had recently been granted within the last 24 hours. At the time, however, no one knew exactly why the order was given or the nature of Ray and Daniel’s seemingly complicated relationship.
Now, we have more insight into why the incident occurred and what led to a father asking for a restraining order against his own son. The details come via new, handwritten declaration documents obtained by The New York Post, in which Ray revealed the sad truth about his son and their relationship dynamic.
Describing Daniel as an “addict” and a “danger to himself,” Ray explained that his son had been struggling with a drug addiction for nearly 10 years. Ray also alleged that his son’s behavior has become increasingly worse as time has passed, and that Daniel has been stealing money from him.
“He has overdosed 4 times. They had to bring him back to life 2 times at the hospital! He has stolen extreme amounts of money [and] valuable items! He [illegible] steals every day for years!” Ray wrote, as the Post reported. “My son Daniel Leonard has been a drug addict for 7 or 8 years at least. His behavior has gotten worse over the years!”
Ray then cited two incidents where Daniel came into his home as reasons behind his eventual restraining order filing. The first incident sadly ended with the police being called after Ray’s son allegedly tried to push him.
“We had a physical altercation where he pushed me and got ugly! The police officers were needed at that moment! The police officers came and [Daniel] was escorted off our property because of where things were headed,” Ray explained.
As a result of the latest incident, Ray feels as if his son poses a threat to both himself and his own family. He also shared that his antics have now stoked fear in his wife and others.
“I love my son, but he has become a danger not only himself but to his family! My wife is extremely afraid, along with my daughter Camille,” he concluded. “His behavior has gotten worse every day. We haven’t had a day of peace in 9 years, which is the reality of his addiction! Scared for my family!:
