New York Family Shattered After Mother-Son Argument Turns Fatal

In a matter of seconds, a heated argument between a mother and her teenage son turned into a nightmare.

Sixteen-year-old Ca’hry Gibson clung to the outside of a vehicle as it pulled away from his family’s Rochester, New York, home on an October afternoon in 2025. Moments earlier, prosecutors say he and his mother, Aneka Connor, had been arguing over his cellphone, according to WHAM 13 News.

The confrontation spilled onto the driveway as Gibson continued to follow his mother. Then, home security footage showed Conner jumping into her car and backing out onto the street. That’s when Gibson climbed onto the vehicle. Then she accelerated.

The 16-year-old lost his grip and fell onto the pavement, suffering injuries so severe that he would spend weeks on life support, according to News 10 NBC.

“They explained to me, ‘Your son is probably going to be in this state for the rest of his life, Mr. Gibson. You’re going to have to decide to get him off the ventilator, give him a trach tube and take him home as is, or you are going to have to decide and take the tube out and let him go,’” the victim’s father, Christopher Gibson, told News 10 in November.

Gibson died on Nov. 7, 2025. His mother was arrested weeks later.

“My son was 16 years old,” Christopher told WHAM 13, adding, “16, 16 years old.”

The tragedy shocked the community and shattered a family. This week, Connor, 38, admitted responsibility for her role in the fatal incident. She pled guilty in Monroe County Court to manslaughter, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child, according to the outlets.

The criminal case drew widespread attention because of the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding Gibson’s death. Investigators reviewed evidence, including video footage, before Connor was charged.

According to Connor’s plea agreement, she is expected to serve one to three years behind bars. Still, the victim’s father said that’s not justice.

“I don’t think that’s enough time for nobody,” Christopher said, according to WHAM 13. “Not once you take a life. No. There’s people sitting in jail for weed charges got more time than that,” he said. “No, I’m not accepting that.”

Outside the courtroom, the grieving father continued.

“My son is dead, his mom is in jail, and I’ve got to accept that and learn how to live with that,” he said.

For Christopher, forgiveness was less about Connor and more about finding a way to move forward after an unimaginable loss. “Just ready to get past all of this,” he said. “Can’t get past it without forgiving her. It’s not for her anyway — it’s for me, so I don’t be mad and angry all the time.”

Connor addressed the court during her hearing on Monday (June 22). According to her attorney, the mother is remorseful and plans to use her prison time to better herself.

Other family members remained unconvinced. Gibson’s older sister, Ojahnique Harris, gave a victim impact statement in court and later told 13WHAM why she walked out of the courtroom. “It doesn’t mean anything because she’s still blaming everybody but herself,” she said.

“Ca’hry was a good kid,” Ojahnique added. “Ca’hry was lovable. He was loved. He was wanted.”
