Kawhi Leonard Salary-Cap Scandal: Why the Feds Are Now Investigating the Clippers

The NBA already hit the Los Angeles Clippers with one of the stiffest punishments in league history. But now, the Kawhi Leonard salary-cap scandal has taken another turn, as the Justice Department is reportedly looking into the team’s dealings with its star player.

Federal prosecutors are reportedly investigating the Clippers’ relationship with Leonard, adding a much bigger legal question to a controversy that has already rocked the franchise, The New York Times reported.

At the center of the investigation are allegations that the Clippers used outside business and endorsement arrangements to give Leonard additional compensation that wasn’t properly reflected in his NBA contract.

As we previously reported, the NBA fined the Clippers $30 million, took away five future first-round draft picks and suspended team owner Steve Ballmer from league activities for one year. Leonard was fined $700,000, while his uncle and former business manager, Dennis Robertson, was banned from the NBA for five years.

The Clippers, however, have pushed back hard on the NBA’s findings and plan to challenge the league’s decision.

But now that law enforcement is involved, the team could be facing another set of challenges as the team is back in the spotlight.

According to ESPN, federal prosecutors in Brooklyn are examining the Clippers’ relationship with Leonard and their financial arrangements. The investigation is still reportedly in its early stages and doesn’t mean anyone has been accused or charged with a crime.

The NBA’s salary cap is supposed to keep teams from using their financial muscle to create advantages outside the rules.

That’s why this situation goes beyond Leonard’s contract. It raises questions about the line between legitimate endorsement deals and salary-cap circumvention.

For the Clippers, the fallout is already significant. They’ve lost money, draft picks and plenty of goodwill. Now, there’s another question hanging over the franchise: Did the Clippers simply push the NBA’s rules too far, or could the Leonard arrangements create a much bigger legal problem?

Right now, nobody knows.

But with federal investigators reportedly taking a closer look, the Kawhi Leonard saga could have consequences far beyond the basketball court.
