Kamala Harris Recalls the Time Husband Doug Emhoff Nearly Came to Blows with a Protester to Protect Her
Former Vice President Kamala Harris is opening up about a surprising time when her husband, Doug Emhoff, almost popped out and showed folks he wasn’t the one to play with when it comes to his wife. And funny enough, her story isn’t the only example out there!
Harris’ reveal came as part of her latest interview with Keke Palmer on the “Baby, This Is Keke Palmer” podcast. There, the two women spoke about how tough it is to warn their families about negative press, and how they urge them not to respond or get physical with people.
That’s when Harris shared that there was a past moment when her husband almost got involved in a physical altercation with a man years ago.
“That did happen once. Doug jumped the stage. Doug was in the back of the auditorium, and I was on the stage. And this fella came on the stage, approaching me. And Doug was in the back of the auditorium. [He] ran down the aisle, right down the middle, and jumped the stage. So that has happened,” Harris said around the 18-minute mark with a laugh.
After doing some digging, it’s highly likely that the former VP is referring to the 2019 incident that took place at MoveOn’s Big Ideas Forum in San Francisco. While speaking in her capacity as then-Senator, a man randomly bum-rushed the stage, took her mic, and began espousing his feelings on whatever cause he was there to represent.

It only took a few seconds before event staff, security, and Emhoff himself jumped onstage and forcefully got the man offstage. Check out the clip below.
But as we mentioned earlier, that was far from the only time Emhoff would stand 10 toes down for his wife. We all can’t forget how he gave Bruce Fischer, the husband of GOP Senator Deb Fischer, a taste of his own medicine in January 2025. For context, this was all spawned by Bruce’s refusal to shake then-Vice President Harris’ hand as she was swearing in his wife to office.
Weeks later, at the ceremonial tea at the White House, the former second gentleman opted not to shake Bruce’s hand at that event. As we previously told you at the time, Emhoff reportedly told him: “Why would you try to shake my hand when you wouldn’t shake my wife’s hand?” Bruce did end up eventually apologizing to Emhoff over the exchange, though he stopped short of issuing one to Harris herself.
It’s clear to see that Emhoff doesn’t play when it comes to respecting and protecting his wife. And honestly, we love to see it!
