Every year, the annual Roots Picnic always delivers on unforgettable moments, and this year’s festival at its new home, Philadelphia’s Belmont Plateau, is no exception. This night was definitely one to remember as he came on stage, debuting his fully combed-out afro, closing out the freeform loc era.

This transformation is a massive shift for Jay-Z’s look. For years, his uncombed, crown of locs channeled a high-art– depicting a distinct Jean-Michel Basquiat meets “Black Mozart” vibe. For Hov to trade that deliberate, avant-garde silhouette for a bold, voluminous afro says a lot. We love how he turned back the clock, paying homage with a retro look that feels both deeply nostalgic and a bit refreshing.

Ahead of the festival’s official kickoff, videos of Jay-Z performing his classic records at a private event already began to make their rounds online, with fans speculating about what he had planned for his highly anticipated performance. 

“Let me find out my boy got a haircut,” one TikTok user joked. 

Another followed up, “Gonna unleash the haircut with the Yankee fitted.” 

Well, those predictions weren’t too far off. Stepping onto the stage, the “Blueprint” rapper debuted his fully combed-out afro, immediately sending shockwaves on the internet. But his hair wasn’t the only thing that he unleashed.

During his a capella freestyle, Jay-Z took aim at a laundry list of names, including Drake, Nicki Minaj, Dame Dash, Ye, and Jaguar Wright. With every bar, he reminded us why he’s still the greatest rapper alive. With three Yankee Stadium performance dates secured, many fans see this performance as just the beginning of a larger comeback.

Beyond the mindblowing freestyle, folks couldn’t stop talking about Jay-Z’s new hairstyle.
