Honoring a Beautiful Young Life: The Funeral of Nolan Wells
On Monday, July 20, the community in Mississippi gathered to honor Nolan Xavier Wells, an 18-year-old whose death has left his family, friends and community mourning while seeking answers.
The service celebrated the life of a young man remembered as a student-athlete, son and friend with a future ahead of him. But beyond the funeral, Nolan’s story has sparked broader conversations about transparency, accountability and how communities respond when a young Black life is lost under troubling circumstances.
As loved ones say goodbye, they are also demanding that Nolan’s memory be met with truth. Here are some of the key moments from the memorial service.

Before the service began, the family remembered their son through a series of photos from his childhood.

Rev. Al Sharpton Begins with Prayer
Rev. Al Sharpton began with prayer, offering comfort, remembrance and a message of hope as loved ones gather to honor Nolan.
“Look on his family: His mother, his father, his siblings and all his blood relatives that long after the cameras are gone, long after the crowds stop coming by, they will bear the burden of an empty chair in the house; they will bear the burden of memories that will not ever leave them,” he said.
“Let us pursue justice,” the reverend continued. “Let every stone be rolled back, let every veil be torn asunder and let the truth pop out of the ground like a flower, and let justice flow down like water.”

Black celebrities like Spike Lee and Terrell “T.O.” Owens reportedly attended Nolan’s service.
Mother Speaks
Sharpton invited Nolan’s parents, Christine and Eugene Wonsley, to speak about the life that Nolan lived.
“If you ever had the privilege of meeting our son or calling him a friend, then you experienced a glimpse of God’s love through him,” Christine said on stage. “As much as our hearts are broken, we find peace in knowing that our son is resting in the arms of the Lord.”
“Nolan, your father and I are incredibly proud of you,” she continued. “In a world that can often feel dark, be like Nolan.”
Father Speaks
Then, Eugene spoke about the role model that Nolan set for his younger siblings, on and off the field. “I know that he would’ve done anything he could to make you guys happy,” the father told his children in the crowd.
“Nolan meant a lot to a lot of people,” he added. “And today just shows us how much he meant to the community, to the country and to the world.”
Father of Sonya Massey Attends
The father of Sonya Massey, the Black woman shot and killed by ex-officer Sean Grayson in 2024, was also spotted at Nolan’s funeral.
The Eulogy
Sharpton essentially gave two eulogies: one to honor Nolan’s life and another to honor him in death. He began by pointing out what Nolan’s case has sparked across the country.
“Every day, I have thought about what this means and what it could mean,” he said. “It could be the healing, or it could be the poking of the wound. That’s gonna be decided by what we do.”
“All whites are not racist, and all Blacks are not angry,” Sharpton said. “Somewhere in the middle, we have to meet and find what is just and fair.” He continued demanding “a full and thorough” investigation into his death.
Rev. Sharpton, Tyler Perry Offer a $100,000 Award
We previously told you, the Wells family, attorney Ben Crump and Sharpton were accused of using the case for financial gain. To that, Sharpton denied the allegations and also pledged $50,000 for anyone with information
Tyler Perry also matched Sharpton’s donation.
“He was not on that island by himself,” Sharpton said of Nolan. “Stand up and tell the truth!”
Mississippi’s History of Racial Violence
Rev. Sharpton also cited Mississippi’s history of racial violence, referencing the murders of Emmett Till and Medgar Evers.
“The reason why a lot of people in the nation are looking at this Nolan situation is that we’ve looked at history in Mississippi. Some of us remember what happened in Mississippi,” Sharpton said. “Before we can medicate and heal today, we’ve got to look at our history.”
Tyler Perry, Bryon Allen Pay for Service
Sharpton acknowledged filmmaker Tyler Perry, producer Byron Allen and others for paying for Nolan’s service in full.
Ben Crump Speaks
When attorney Ben Crump spoke during the service, he repeatedly called for “justice for Nolan Wells.”
He also acknowledged a pattern of Black women, men and children whose deaths have triggered nationwide outrage. “I think about Trayvon Martin. I think about Michael Brown. I think about Breonna Taylor. I think about Botham Jean. I think about Stephon Clark. I think about Sonya Massey. I think about so many of our children that were taken from us under highly questionable circumstances,” he said.
“Our pain hurts just as much as your pain,” the civil rights attorney added. “So whatever you would do for your children, if they were on that boat on July 4th, we want you to do it for Nolan Wells!”
‘Nolan’s Life Mattered!’
Nolan’s parents joined Crump and Sharpton back on the stage for one final call to action. Three words: “Nolan’s life mattered!” quickly filled the room as friends, family, celebrities, spectators and everyone else repeatedly chanted.
