Exonerated But Under Fire: Stefon Diggs Wins in Court as Public Debate Rages

NFL star Stefon Diggs walked out of court this week with his freedom intact. But while a “not guilty” verdict following a polarizing assault case was expected to signal the end of Diggs’ legal worries, for the athlete whose private life often outshines his professional one, the court’s swift decision has done very little to calm public scrutiny.

At the same time, the free agent is itching to get back on the football field after being cut by the New England Patriots earlier this year. Now that this legal liability has been squashed, questions remain over whether clearing his name in the courtroom will be enough to clear his path back to the league.

As we previously told you, Diggs’ private chef, Jamila Adams, accused him of choking and striking her during an altercation back in December. While the athlete denied the incident ever happened, the two-day trial was packed with witness testimony, sustained objections and even a stark warning from the judge. The jury took only 90 minutes to return a verdict, marking a major win for Diggs and athletes who often face false accusations.

In the courtroom, the athlete was overcome with emotion following the verdict. His attorney, Mitchell Shuster, emphasized the serious nature of the case in a statement and shared his disapproval of people who “manufacture” domestic violence claims as a means to a big payday.

“People have to stop targeting professional athletes and trying to extract money. They have a target on their back, and it’s hard enough doing what they do. And this has to stop. People should focus on real victims from domestic violence, and allegations like this do a tremendous disservice to those who are afflicted and impacted by causes like this,” he said, according to USA Today.

Online, however, Black folks were divided over the court’s quick decision. Many users defended Diggs against his accuser, including one person who issued a warning to other wealthy men.

“If you are a man of means and wealth you will be targeted. It’s not if but when. Cover your backside,” @privateeyeruss wrote on X.

The case attracted considerable social media attention– especially given Diggs’ reputation as a playboy. During Adams’ testimony, she revealed that the intimate relationship between her and Diggs had soured before she moved in as his live-in chef.

While some folks celebrated with Diggs after the verdict, many women held him accountable.

“‘Not guilty’ isn’t ‘nothing happened,’ it’s ‘couldn’t prove it.’ People really treating a verdict like a personality cleanse is wild,” @Dr_Elon1 tweeted. “Congrats to his lawyers though, MVPs as usual.”

“Not guilty of this crime but very much criminally horny and unwell,” @tatithechin tweeted about the athlete.

Some folks shared sympathy for the NFL star. “Stefon Diggs was exonerated but his arrest will still count in the fbi arrest records as Black crime,” @B1TuckerCarlson said. “Per capita that.”

Others were more focused on the upcoming NFL season and Diggs’ role as a free agent. @htvzn responded to the verdict, saying, “whatever just stay out my conference.”

@InTheNixOfTime predicted that Diggs will come back to the NFL now that his charges are cleared. “So who is gonna sign him? Given the recent legal troubles, either the Raiders or the Pats will ask for him back.”

Folks are already placing bets on which NFL team will finally scoop the talented wide receiver. The former Patriot was released from the team shortly after the 2026 Super Bowl, which New England lost.
