It’s been almost two months since the sudden death of influencer Ashlee Jenae during a dream vacation in Tanzania. Now, authorities have released their findings, bringing an official conclusion to a case that continues to draw widespread attention online and left her family searching for answers.
Ashlee Jenae, whose legal name was Ashly Robinson, died April 9 while vacationing in Zanzibar with her fiancé, Joe McCann. She was 31, we previously told you. Tanzanian authorities announced this week that investigators determined Robinson died by suicide following what officials described as mental distress, TMZ reported. The findings came after a review conducted by the Zanzibar Police Force and the Criminal Investigation Department.
The Oregon-based content creator had built a following of more than 88,000 people on Instagram, where she shared lifestyle content, travel adventures and glimpses into her relationship with McCann, The Root reported. Just days before her death, Robinson posted celebratory photos marking her 31st birthday and her engagement during a safari in Tanzania.
Her death quickly became the subject of intense speculation.
According to earlier police reports, hotel staff intervened after a dispute between Robinson and McCann and placed the couple in separate rooms. Authorities questioned McCann and temporarily confiscated his travel documents during the investigation, though he was never accused of a crime and was treated as a witness.

In May, McCann publicly addressed Robinson’s death for the first time, calling it an “incomprehensible tragedy” and remembering her as a compassionate, loving partner who dreamed of becoming a mother.
Robinson’s family launched a fundraising campaign to help cover funeral and travel expenses, drawing support from thousands of donors. While authorities have now closed the case, her death continues to resonate with followers who watched her document what appeared to be a happy new chapter of her life just days before tragedy struck.
