Austin Gentrifiers In Viral Video Sparks Outrage After Citing $1.5M Home Value to HBCU Students

A viral video involving a white homeowner and Black students near Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas, is bringing national attention to the ongoing tension between gentrification, race, and public space.

The conflict, captured on camera by student activist Bri Nunn, shows a white neighbor shouting at students over public street parking outside the historic HBCU. Rather than addressing a basic neighborhood parking dispute, the interaction quickly degraded into a display of racial entitlement and classism when the homeowner weaponized the price of her house and the university’s graduation rate against the students.

Here is a breakdown of what happened, why the video is going viral, and how the incident highlights the real-world impact of gentrification surrounding historically Black colleges.

In the clip, a white couple living across the street from Huston-Tillotson University gets confronted by a Black student activist named Bri Nunn for allegedly harassing the HBCU’s Black students and faculty over public street parking. According to Nunn, who posted the conversation on Instagram, the wife had been allegedly leaving notes on students’ cars and even blocking a Black professor’s vehicle with trash cans and recycling bins.

Given the woman’s consistently annoying behavior, Nunn tried to approach her respectfully to ask her to stop touching other people’s cars. But that’s when things took a turn.

“We paid $1.5 million for our home. Y’all’s graduation rate is 25 percent! This is OUR NEIGHBORHOOD. This is our neighborhood; we paid to live here,” the woman said while raising her voice at Nunn.

She then told Nunn to get off her property (even though she was standing in the middle of the street), threatened to call the cops on her, and kept insisting that she essentially was in the right for her actions due to how much she paid for her home.

In her post to Instagram, Nunn gave more context on the ordeal, writing in part: “People have been parking here for YEARS with no complaints and the neighbors are friendly and understanding. The fact that she degraded our school and said she paid 1.5 million dollars to gentrify our neighborhood and said we only have a 25% graduation rate is SO racist and disgusting.” (Per College Board, the school’s rate is actually 33 percent.)

Nunn continued, “See how quickly she screams at me and asserts her privilege over a Black Woman. Please, if you know who this is, alert her job so people can be aware of how she behaves towards Black people. We are SO tired of the disrespect and danger to our lives.”

For students simply trying to get to class and professors trying to do their jobs, dealing with a neighbor who allegedly treats public parking like her personal property is the last thing they need. We don’t know who needs to hear this, but the price tag on your house does not give you the right to make Black people feel unwelcome in their own community.

It’s no wonder why folks watching the vid were taken aback at the interaction.

“Her immediately mentioning the graduating rates??? What is her problem?” wrote one user on TikTok.

“Wait, I’m confused why she thinks just bc she paid a specific amount it automatically allows her to run shit???” said another.

One other user wrote on Instagram: “It’s not illegal to park on the street in Texas. Trust me, I’ve looked that shit up multiple times. Ken and Karen can get bent or move their asses to a gated community.”

Added another in part: “She learned this way of thinking from somewhere! Racism is taught.”
