Andrew Gillum Tests Negative for Drugs: Latest Updates on His Legal Status
(Updated on 07/07/2026 @ 12:00pm)
Former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum is trying to clear his name after his arrest for drug possession earlier this month led to speculation about his health. The once rising star of the Democratic Party has previously been open about his struggle with addiction. Now, however, new reports suggest he is getting serious about staying clean.
According to TMZ, Gillum tested negative for drugs after voluntarily enrolling in a drug testing program following his recent arrest in Alabama. Court documents reportedly show Gillum completed the tests and received clean results.
A judge granted Gillum’s request for a hearing to determine whether he must enter a court-approved treatment program. The hearing is scheduled for August 4.

Andrew Gillum came within a fraction of becoming Florida’s first Black governor. Now, a series of legal troubles, including his latest arrest, has completely overshadowed the former Tallahassee mayor’s political legacy.

Gillum, 46, was arrested in Daphne, Alabama, after police said they found methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia during a traffic stop, according to TMZ. He was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana and was released from jail the following day, according to authorities.
The arrest is the latest setback for the former gubernatorial candidate, whose political career has unraveled since his narrow 2018 loss to Republican Ron DeSantis.
Gillum entered politics at a young age, winning a seat on the Tallahassee City Commission at 23 before being elected mayor in 2014. Four years later, he emerged as a national Democratic star after upsetting better-funded opponents to win the party’s nomination for governor, according to NPR.
His campaign energized progressive voters and Black Floridians, and a victory would have made him Florida’s first Black governor. Despite endorsements from former President Barack Obama and Sen. Bernie Sanders, Gillum lost to DeSantis by less than 33,000 votes. The gubernatorial race went down in state history as one of the closest to date.
But less than two years after the loss, Gillum started making national headlines, not for his politics, but for more personal matters.
In 2020, he was found intoxicated in a Miami Beach hotel room where another man had suffered an apparent drug overdose, according to POLITICO. Police recovered suspected methamphetamine from the room, but Gillum was not charged.

“This has been a wake-up call for me,” he said in a written statement after the incident. “Since my race for governor ended, I fell into a depression that has led to alcohol abuse. I witnessed my father suffer from alcoholism, and I know the damaging effects it can have when untreated. I also know that alcoholism is often a symptom of deeper struggles.”
The Florida native later shared that he entered rehabilitation for alcohol abuse and depression.
His legal troubles continued in 2022, however, when federal prosecutors indicted him on charges including wire fraud, conspiracy and making false statements to the FBI, according to the Department of Justice. Prosecutors alleged Gillum accepted undisclosed gifts from undercover FBI agents posing as developers while serving as Tallahassee’s mayor.
The following year, a federal jury acquitted Gillum of making false statements to the FBI but could not reach a verdict on the remaining fraud charges. According to court records, prosecutors later dismissed those counts.
Although Gillum remained involved in political commentary through the NAACP Image Award-winning podcast “Native Land Pod,” he never returned to elected office. He was released from custody.
