$4M in One Night: LDF’s Massive Fundraiser Proves the Fight for Voting Rights Is in Full Force

In a swift and stunning display of support for civil rights, donors at the 38th National Equal Justice Awards Dinner contributed millions in mere minutes, signaling a desperate urgency to protect voters’ rights.

Under the gleaming lights of The Glasshouse in New York City on Thursday, the Legal Defense Fund (LDF)— America’s premier legal organization fighting for racial justice— marked its 86th year on the frontlines.

The presence of luminaries like Delroy Lindo, Leslie Odom Jr., and Yaya DaCosta lent a celebratory air to the night, but the mission remained sobering: defending a democracy under fire. Amidst a chaotic reality of redistricting battles in Louisiana and voter suppression, the LDF mobilized its supporters to the tune of $4 million.

The funds raised on May 14 will go directly toward the LDF’s emergency efforts to safeguard the upcoming election and defend the progress made over the last eight decades.

LDF President and Director-Counsel Janai Nelson reminded the crowd during her opening remarks that after “250 years into the American experiment, the promises of equal representation, economic opportunity, and belonging remain fiercely contested.”

She added that LDF, the nation’s first civil and human rights law organization founded in 1940, continues to stand firm on the front lines defending the law and reclaiming the very definition of our democracy.

“As the organization that has pushed and pulled this nation for 86 years – often against its will – toward a multi-racial future where thriving is the standard for all, we live by the immortal words of our founder, Thurgood Marshall: this is our democracy. Ours. The lawyers, researchers, and organizers who have lent their brilliance to LDF since our founding,” Nelson continued. “We are on the frontlines and at the vanguard of a movement to refound our democracy.”
