30 Years After ‘Reasonable Doubt,’ Is Jay-Z Still One of the GOATS?
Jay-Z is back. In his first live solo performance in six years, the legendary rapper and business mogul headlined the 2026 Roots Picnic this past weekend (Saturday, May 30) at Fairmount Park’s Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia and gave the culture an unforgettable moment.
During and immediately after Jay-Z’s two-hour, 30-song set, Black Twitter was abuzz with their reactions to the now iconic freestyle where he dissed Drake, Kanye West, and Dame Dash – just to name a few.
The rapper’s return to the stage after such a lengthy hiatus has fans and haters alike asking, “Does Jay-Z still have it?”
According to Bobby Shmurda, Jay’s best days are behind him.
Shmurda, who was formerly represented by Roc Nation, claims that Jay-Z is too old to be rapping, vehemently dismissing the freestyle. He even went as far as to say the “Show Me What You Got” rapper is suffering from an identity crisis.
“Niccas be 56 years old going through an identity [crisis.] Lmaooo. Like who you going be next fronting ass nicca. lol nicca too old for that shit go sit down old head,” he posted on social media.
Another user agreed with Smurda’s assessment about Hov’s freestyle bars on stage with an interesting description of the performance.
“That Jay-Z freestyle last night was garbage truck juice,” they posted on X.
But others online weren’t as critical. One user came to Hov’s defense against those who weren’t feeling his bars.
“They’re on here saying Jay-Z’s freestyle was trash,” they wrote. “If you listen to that freestyle and think it’s trash. Don’t tweet me about rap, thank you.”
One user compared the impact of Hov’s freestyle to Drake dropping three albums at once, giving Jay credit for making an even bigger impact on the culture in a lot less time.
“The way Jay Z did a 3 min freestyle at midnight and got all these people combing through the lyrics,” the user wrote. ‘And that other dude put out 3 albums, and all I hear about is streaming numbers. No culture, no admirers, just sheep. 3 mins. Vs 3 albums.”
Other fans agreed, including one user who argued that one verse was enough to prove that Jay is more than worthy of GOAT status.
“All it took was one freestyle for JAY-Z to prove he’s still the greatest rapper alive,” they posted.
Without question, Jay’s performance at The Roots Picnic solidified his status as a GOAT in the game. His impeccable lyricism, magnetic stage presence, and the ability to turn the world upside down with an a capella three-minute freestysle is a feat not many could pull off. At 56 years old, he is light-years away from other rappers who are more than half his age.
While the performance was marketed as a celebration of his classic album “Reasonable Doubt,” which turns 30 this month, Hov’s set actually transformed into something else. It was a coronation for one of hip-hop’s most esteemed kings, and he was fed up with the “subjects” and “court jesters” taking shots at him and his family. The crown is still his, even though he’s wearing it now over a humongous afro.
It’s just like he said on “Takeover” nearly 25 years ago, “Y’all gone learn to respect the King.”
