What Is the Show About?
“A Different World” returns to Hillman College with a new class stepping onto campus—and more than a handful of beloved faces coming home. At the center is Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), Whitley and Dwayne’s youngest daughter, who’s set on figuring out her own path at Hillman.
Along the way, she’s joined by a new generation that reflects the breadth of Black life on campus: Rashida Duvall (Alijah Kai), Shaquille Johnson (Cornell Young IV), Amir Rodale (Jordan Aaron Hall), Hazel Henry (Kennedi Reece), and Kojo Achebe (Chibuikem Uche).

Which of the Original Cast Members Are Coming Back?
If you’ve been paying attention to some of the headlines over the last several months, then you may have noticed that more than a handful of the original cast members are coming back to Hillman in various capacities. And the best part about it? They’re all reprising their roles. But which fan favorite faces will be returning to The Pit? How Many Episodes Are There?
The show will debut on September 24 with all 10, 30-minute-long episodes. So that means you can get your binge on expeditiously and won’t have to wait week to week to find out what happens next!
What Topics Will This New Show Cover?
Just like the OG show, this new iteration of “A Different World” won’t shy away from current and hot topics happening in the world. Per showrunner and creator Felicia Pride, viewers can expect to see some real-world issues explored across the episodes.
“We wanted to address the threats young people are facing today, just wanting to go to school and be educated. We also deal with sexual health, immigration and ICE, and even more personal issues including learning differences and navigating grief,” Pride said in a statement sent to The Root. “We touch on sexual identity and orientation. There’s a lot covered across the gamut of social and personal issues that young people are facing today.”
Who Are the Main Characters?
As previously stated, this new series will center around Dwayne and Whitley’s kid, Deborah, and the slew of kids she meets along her Hillman journey. Keep reading for a breakdown of who’s who!
Deborah Wayne
Played by Maleah Joi Moon, Deborah is Whitley and Dwayne’s lovingly sheltered youngest daughter, with a charming free spirit, her mother’s flair for the spotlight, and her father’s big heart. Talented in art, music, and theater, she’s still figuring out which path is hers. Her parents may have plans for her Hillman experience, but campus life has other ideas—and will push Deborah to define herself on her own terms.
Moon’s previous acting credits include “Hell’s Kitchen” on Broadway, for which she won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
Shaquille Johnson
Played by Cornell Young IV, Shaquille is a superstar high school quarterback who shocks everyone by choosing the premier HBCU, Hillman College. Managed by his ambitious father, Ron Johnson (Bell), we watch as Shaquille tries to figure out how to assert his independence all while dealing with personal conflicts and a potentially budding romance with Deborah.
Johnson’s previous acting credits include “Forever,” “Beyond the Gates,” and “Doing Life.”
Rashida Duvall
Played by Alijah Kai (a.k.a. Tichina Arnold’s daughter), Rashida is Deborah’s new roommate with political aspirations and passion for looking fly. A first-generation college student and criminal justice major, Rashida is ambitious, responsible, and determined to lift others as she climbs. She has little patience for what she considers frivolous behavior, which makes free-spirited Deborah an obvious headache. But their unlikely roommate situation eventually grows into a friendship that challenges both women to see the world a little differently.
Kai’s previous acting credits include “The Sound of Christmas,” “Runt,” and “Prey.”
Kojo Achebe
Played by Chibuikem Uche, Kojo is a Ghanaian-Nigerian fashion merchandising student who’s really just in college to keep his parents happy. An entrepreneur at heart, his real focus is on fashion, much to his parents’ disappointment. But after pouring himself into Hillman’s fashion show, Kojo has to decide whether he’ll keep chasing his parents’ approval or finally have the courage to follow his own dreams.
Uche’s previous acting credits include “American Housewife,” One of Us Is Lying,” and “The Tomorrow War.”
Amir Rodale
Played by Jordan Aaron Hall, Amir is a psychology major, street-smart observer, and resident advice-giver who’s much better at solving everyone else’s problems than his own. After a housing shortage leaves him without a dorm, he ends up crashing on the community couch at Garvey Hall. And while it’s not exactly the college experience he had in mind, his friendships with Shaquille and Kojo are there to help keep him grounded.
Hall’s previous acting credits include “The Idea of You,” “Rustin,” and “What We Found.”
Hazel Henry
Played by Kennedi Reece (a Howard grad), Hazel is a small-town girl who comes to Hillman convinced she’s arrived at the promised land. Her two goals: make her parents proud and find herself a God-fearing husband. But being both experienced and naive, Hazel quickly realized that Hillman is going to challenge everything she thought she knew, leading her to figure out which beliefs are truly hers and which ones were handed down to her.
Reece’s previous acting credits include “Charged.”

While Brandy Norwood was teased as the person who would be the vocal beauty behind the show’s new take on its iconic theme song in August 2026, we won’t know for sure until the season drops on September 24!
What’s the Tone of the New Show?
According to creator and showrunner Felicia Pride, viewers shouldn’t expect the same single-camera setup as the original. Instead, this new show will be a dramedy and shot differently. However, it will still have the classic Hillman feeling that fans know and love.
“It was very important to me to maintain the integrity and spirit of the show, but when we thought about what the show could feel like now, we landed squarely in dramedy. We’re in a dramatic moment in one turn, and then in another, we’re laughing out loud,” Pride explained in a statement sent to The Root.
She continued: “What has stayed the same is the feeling. The Pit still has that warmth, like you’re going to get some knowledge and some hush puppies, but it has evolved. The feeling of community is the same. It has the same feeling of an ensemble of characters you can easily fall in love with.”
